Modding AMR's 300

Post by A M R »

EDIT BY CHRIS_C: Split into a new topic from Ali's Project thread

looking good mate. cant wait til its finished.

i reckon i'll do a turbo conversion as well maybe in about a year and a 16v head will be on soon after i get the car (more delays in getting the car lol).

are you sticking higher flow injectors on, or are the standard ones enough?

damn i need to get good at handling these rwd's a bit more. almost shat myself today when i was driving a budget spec c180 with a manual box. it rained today and the roads were pretty wet, and theres me getting all happy with my right foot and clutch kicking it and giving it hell through the back roads, then it got really sideways and im like 'arrrgh' but i managed to get it under control and was quite happy with my 'drift'.

oh, if anyones interested in a bit of drifty fun, i have an airfield near me - possibility of holding a meet there?

I just hope that wasn't a customer's car. :? Next time I have to take my car in for anything (precious little thank goodness nowadays) I'm gonna be setting the rev limiter to 2,000 rpm

Airfield would be useful for me, for tuning purposes.

Get a car, get insurance, get some no claims. You might not even like a 300 yet... :? Also, a 16v head wont go on 'just like that' even with Tommy Cooper alive.

That would be a cool thing about MegaSquirt actually...

After an MOT our 300 came back with big splashes of mud on the side once, but there arn't really any muddy roads nearby... :?

lol

i like my 340 already although i havent driven it yet. i miss my dl i only had it a short time :( and it got kiled by some idiot. i think if i cant manage the 1.7 turbo route as it looks very difficult i wil get a 480 turbo.

for the 1 .7 turbo route the main things are clutch and wiring??

Cheers

oh i was under the impression that a 16v head would just bolt straight on from previous comments. enlighten me please.

and no i havent heard of ac barnett.

yes the car was a customers car  and no it didnt have enough power...
(oh but i drove a 996 carrera this morning which sounded beautiful!)

i know im getting a bit ahead of myself but i want the power just so i can kill people at the lights. and as someone said, a fwd 1.6 16v could beat this car. do you realise how badly i would have the piss taken out of me if i raced a 1.6 and it beat me? (legally of course)

oh and there havent been that many cars that i didnt like driving. i could probably count them on one hand.

sorry for the thread hijack

That is worring :?

Dont you stay with your cars when there being moted?

i know my dad does and so do i.

one thing i know is that when the BMW 2002 Tii when to jaymic in cromer for its performance tuning they drove it before and said.... IT GOES WELL!!
there was small problem with dirty fuel filter that made misfiring when warm that was all and they charged my dad 2000 pounds plus they made it slower by messin with his ajustments :(

next week the gearbox fell apart they had used it soo hard they caused a nut to come loose.

I always note the mileage before my car goes in for any trade work. If it has gone up by more than a reasonable amount (for what was being done), it'll not go back there in a hurry. The MSD unit I've got waiting to go in has a variable rev limiter....and it seems to come from the factory with a 3000rpm 'pill' in the box :D

cheers

I'm sure it will just bolt on, but don't expect it to work. In fact expect some knackered valves as soon as you try to start it!

Easiest option is to fit a whole 16v engine, along with either the 7/940 management or MS or big carbs. The 360 ECU certainly wont run a 16v engine!

I've had plenty of faster cars than my 360s but I've come back to them because they're quirky and interesting to drive rather than out-right quick. But if you're only interested in wasting people off the lights either dont get a 300, or buy one and put a nitrous kit on it! It'll do the job, with far less hassle and you'll be able to brag to your mates you've got 'NOS'.

Oooook.... A, glad I don't own that car......... B, pay for it to be serviced and thrashed where you work and C, have been your boss explaining why their car had ended up in a hedge after you lost control of it on some back roads!

I've never let my 360 or 340 be driven anywhere by anyone I don't trust. I always stay at the MOT, I do trust the people where I take my cars though, they also respect the 300 series, but as they do it while I wait it's not worth the hassle of getting back home or back to work somehow, only to have to go back later. It's also interesting to watch from the customer viewing area.

Back on topic, Ali, spectacular work! Top work, hope all continues to go well. Get that MS bought and set up asap! Lets see it in action!

There's bolts on and "bolts on". It fits right on and everything lines up, but there's work to be done to make it functional. T-belt pulleys, tensioner...and the small matter of correctly delivering fuel and spark for it.

So you think clutch kicking a customer's car is acceptable? I suppose you'd spit on people's burgers if you worked in a fast food restaurant?

There's not a lot of shame in being beaten by a B16 VTAK powered Civic...they're rapid cars. It depends on exactly what the FWD 1.6 16v in question is! As a new driver, I was proud of having something as rapid as a stock 360 to drive around while I prove I'm worthy of being on the road. I didn't know many people at 17 who had faster cars, and the sleeper effect allowed me to beat many a faster machine which pulled up on my right at traffic lights. For the first year, I was only beaten at the lights by an Evo 6 and a Jag XJR.

cheers

lol no i hate nitrous and the people that call it 'nos'.

im not only interested in wasting people off the lights. i'd rather have better handling if anything. ive already got my mind set on the 360 anyway.

i'd rather keep the volvo lump and get a new head than messing about with putting a new engine in.

would the 16v head work if i used MS?

edit: i dont muck about in everyones car. actually i dont even have a good excuse for doing that except its fun. i probably sound like a twat but you guys were young at one point too, and ive heard plenty of things from older mechanics about the things they used to get up to in their days
