I'd give the vauxhall the benefit of the doubt here.. but you might make a chance if you strip it, variomatic might help out too. Seriously though, racing 1.4 and 1.2 econoboxes is a bit sad.. you might want to be the bigger man here and just not bother with racing him at all. Most newer cars (probably my moms 0.9 liter daihatsu as well) will beat an old heavy 1.4 car easily, dunno about the vauxhall, but it's got the advantage on weight.

my sons 1.2 corsa was a 16 valve and went like a rocket,

I would say the 1.4 volvo would be left eating its exhaust smoke

Been there done that  My mate had a Corsa B 1.2 16v and unfortunately they are quite nippy little buggers! Tbh you'll be pretty damn close but he'll just have the edge, catch him off guard or from standstill as you'll have the better launch  He won't have it by a long way and as Ivan says its still racing 70bhp cars...(altho I shouldn't really comment as I did the same and still do now, they just don't see 170brake coming  )

edit: As Ivan said aswell pulling the rear seats out might make a noticeable difference, that and an air filter on mine made a difference (well when the carb wasn't freezing anyway lol)

Get D24 and you will see how funny all this talk about racing is, 20 seconds to 0-100kph or something like that

There is just no point trying to accelerate fast, it will just smoke bit more and make louder noise, when I leave intersection often car behind me is going to overtake as 0-40kph takes already almost 10 seconds and 3 gears

Acceleration speed is meaningless, 1/4 mile trap speed and time around corners are only things that matter sm56

yeah agaist 8v should be close but take all seats out that arent needed  and any thing eles like bottles and other easy to move items

also the amount of petrol in the tank can make a differnce.
my 1.7 would easily whip a corsas ass...... 1.4's seam very much differnt and slower :(

worth a try and what ever its fun :D

2.3 isn't an easy swap as its 340 so renault engined, you'd be better going 440/460/480 turbo or Renault 19 1.8 16v or clio williams, i'd say you'll have it if its a 8v

Well what I hear from Foggy, 1.4's are actually very quick up to 40 or so, almost as quick as a 2.0.

And mikester, It's not going to be too easy to fit a 2.3 to a 340 due to 340 taking Renault engines. It'd be much easier to fit a Renault 1.8 16v, or get a 360 and put the 2.3 in that

EDIT: Ah, you just beat me to it Ali :)

Yeah, 1.4's rock, until 3rd gear speeds! Very nippy for what they are.

Chris mate, you need to get a go in something that isn't a 300!!! I've never driven a nippy one!

Hmm yes, Chris's reference cars include the S**ity Rover :/

Having said that the 1.7 is fairly nippy at lower speeds (I've never driven a 1.4). Comparing it to a 2.5 850 (170ish hp) it doesn't feel too slow, although it has a strong weight advantage. It may also be due to the fact that I drive very gently at under 3k rpm, and the 1.7 has it's power lower down?

Having said that, if you floor it at speed there's no comparison. At 60 in the 1.7 in 5th floor it and nothing really happens. do the same in the 850, even at 75 or 80, and you can feel the acceleration :D
