Went to see the Volvo at the recovery garage today to see if it was worth rescuing. I now know for sure that it is definetley not. The front of the car is 3" out of line and the engine mounts have snapped.
Obviously I couldn't get it home to break it up so sadly most of it will go to the crusher. However I managed to save a few bits and bobs, such as the (excellent condition) bootlid, moulded plastic floor mats, centre switches etc etc.
Some pics anyway
And some ones taken on the day of the accident
Will definetley be getting another one thats for sure.
That's not a bad point Mick, If it's being scrapped can't you just explain that? Say it has been crashed but not scrapped yet (so that you are the legal owner) if the numberplate was a expensive cherished one and not a standard one, there must be some way of keeping the plate.
There have to be allowances for this situation, it's not an uncommon one.
I presume insurance isn't involved, because that would make it even more complicated.
iirc when I transferred Chris's cherished plate from the corsa they can ask to see the doner car and / or the car that is going to recieve the plate ,its very random , I know they asked to see one of the cars involved in the plate transfer on the 360 that old boy I knew sold to Stavros ,
trouble is scrappys now ask for the V5 log book and you need that with the mot to get the plate put on a retention certificate so you would need to sort this out pretty pronto if your going for it ,
it costs about £125.00 for the transfer and retention certificate
I will try to find out more and post it here
Only as the vehicle keeper do you have entitlement to apply to transfer or retain its number.
You should be aware that not all vehicles are eligible to participate in the transfer and retention of registration numbers and not all numbers are transferable.
Where a number is transferable, the vehicle to which it is assigned must meet certain criteria. The V317 and V778/1 transfer and retention application forms respectively, outline the requirements of the schemes and offer further advice in question and answer form.
The leaflet, Registration Numbers and You INF46, also offers further advice on the schemes and is available for download. It is also included when you order the cherished transfer or retention pack from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) form ordering service.

Who can apply?
Only the registered keeper of a vehicle is entitled to apply to transfer its registration number.
What are the requirements for participating vehicles?
Vehicles taking part in the Cherished Transfer scheme must be currently licensed, subject to annual testing (MoT/HGV) and available for inspection. However, to help individuals whose vehicles, for unexpected reasons are unable to be re-licence, DVLA will still consider applications where:
the tax disc for the donor vehicle has expired no more that 12 months previously. (Prior to 1 December 2005 the concession was six months). Please note that to qualify for this concession, there must be no break between the natural expiry date of the licence (tax) and the commencement of SORN. This concession does not apply if you have submitted your licence (tax) for a refund
Recipient vehicles (vehicle the number is to be assigned to) must be currently taxed in order to take part in the cherished transfer scheme. How to apply
Any application to transfer a registration number must be made on a V317 transfer application form which is available from your nearest DVLA local office or from the DVLA, Swansea.

However, from memory it doesn't need to be taxed, as long as it was taxed within the last 6 months I believe, and the MOT isn't required in that case, only if they ask to see it. Which taking vehicles on a trailer is acceptable if it isn't taxed or MOT'd, but that is a lot of hassle.
As Dave says, there must be a way to retain a number after an accident etc. Worth a try, it's a good plate.
