1991 Volvo 340 1.4GL NOW VERY CHEAP!!

Post by Jimmer King »

Hiya!

For sale I have my Volvo 340, 1.4GL. It’s a 1991 J reg, in white with 5 doors. I’m selling it because, well, it was only ever supposed to be a temporary stand in for when my girlfriend’s Punto ate its cambelt: she needed a car for the next day and my friend at work provided. We thought we’d have it a month; that was 7 months ago. We’re now getting something more suited to the high motorway mileage we do. I’d love to keep it and sort it out, but I don’t have the time, money or even a driveway (I live in a flat).

MOT is valid until July 3rd. Currently taxed until end of Sep 2007.

It’s done 88,001 miles but is in use until this weekend. The engine is in very good condition: I’ve been looking after it! I replaced the plugs and leads and changed the oil and filter in November. Replaced the air and fuel filters in Jan/Feb 07, along with the dizzy cap. Had to replace the perished rubber pipes to/from the fuel pump – no leaks since. I’ve given the carb a good clean through and made sure all bolts are tight. There don’t appear to be any oil leaks and I’ve only had to top the oil up a little once. It quite happily did about 1100 miles in a week recently: up north and back, a week in the Lake District (even over the Hardknott Pass) and a few other stops.

Front brakes have plenty of life left. I had the rear brakes overhauled end of Jan 07, new shoes and a swing arm fitted. Had two new tyres fitted on the rear in late Feb, and had the front wheels balanced.

The engine starts 1st time usually, but struggles in very damp/cold weather. Can see a spark on the Renix unit when it's wet: give it a dose of WD40 and it goes. No smoke! The engine runs well, although slightly lumpy at idle. I usually get 30 – 35mpg. It pulls well, accelerates pretty fast and hasn’t given me any problems yet.

The chassis is in great condition, with no underbody rust. Exhaust system is fine.

All the electrics work well: heated seats, electric windows, electric mirrors (n/s takes a little coaxing), and original Volvo radio. The back wiper is slow at first. It has two working headlight wash/wipers, but both are offside so it’s a little lopsided looking. It may be possible to wire the n/s motor up the other way around? Rubbers have split on the headlamp wipers. The interior needs a clean but is generally ok, with no tears. Full Volvo plastic floor mats!

What’s bad:

Was considered written off in a previous life after a rear-end shunt (I have no details), but has been repaired and has the VOSA certificate.

My girlfriend went up the back of someone recently. The n/s headlamp glass needs replacing. The bumper was forced back slightly: I’ve had it off and bent the bumper mounts back into place. She lost the bumper insert plates!

The bonnet leading edge has rusted through: needs repairing or replacing. The crossmember above the radiator has rusted through a bit in the corners, and where the inner wing meets this cross member. Should be quite easy to repair. There’s some small bubbles of surface rust in various places but nothing major as far as I know.

The boot lifter struts have gone, but it came with a piece of wood, perfectly sized for propping the boot open!

The rubber fuel pipes that lead from the fuel filler pipe to the expansion tank (found behind panel in boot) have perished: I never put more than 25l of petrol in as sometimes it flushes up into the upper tank and then slowly dribbles out onto floor.

There's a load more pictures at: http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z46/JimmerKing/

I think that’s about it! I don’t want to scrap it, as there’s plenty of life left in it. I’m in Bristol. If you want to know more, or want to look at it, you can get me on kingjimmer@gmail.com or 07795 446467.

I’ll start at £200 and see what happens!! Of course I'm open to offers.. I need the beast until Saturday, providing my new car is ready.

Cheers,
Jimmer :D

Was searching for ages for a J reg only just bought mine otherwise I so would have had your car.

Plenty of rust though ay!!

Good luck with the sale. Need to get rid of a few to make space for it but let me know if you are struggling to sell it.

How bad is the damage to the back of the vehicle? You say you have no further details about it but if you were to remove the rear bumper would you be able to see the damage or is the repair completed to a high standard?

Jay,

I've not had the back bumper off - externally, the only sign of any damage is a slight waviness of the bumber trim, otherwise it's been repaired well. I'll wait till she gets home and go and have a look. Do you want me to whip it off and have a look?

"Whip off" and "rear bumper": two things I've just discovered don't go together, especially when the gutter is cobbled..

Therefore, I'm not sure: here's a photo of underneath at the back, hopefully it'll help?

I've also just found the owner's handbook.

Offers will be considered!

Hey mate

Thanks for doing that. Thought it might get better seeing the underneath but lol its rusty there too.. Has the car got tax and MOT? Know what you mean about taking the bumper off..It can be a pain.

What work besides the rust needs to be done mechanically? Central locking? Sunroof?

Cheers

Yeah, those bolts are hard to reach - wish I had a couple of extra hands sometimes!

Mechanically, there's nothing else: it doesn't have a sunroof or central locking. It could probably do with a bit of a tune up (lumpy idle) and it runs on when turned off sometimes (but so did the previous 3 Volvos in my family). Clutch and gearbox seem fine. It's just that rust!

Tax is to end of September 07, MOT runs out July 3rd.

Ta,

Thats Strange that it has the electrics and not the central locking. Alarm?

Thanks for the info.

My J reg just lacks the electrics as its just a 340 not a GL..

So tempted but...I can't get over the rust lol..

Price going down: £100 - go on, you know you want to! Will deliver (within reason) for fuel money. I can't scrap her - it'd be a crime!

I would break her for parts but I have absolutely nowhere to do it.

If all these cars that keep coming up for sale weren't so damn far away, I'd have filled the warehouse by now. Maybe it's my fault for living in Scumderland. :?

Well, she's gotta go soon! Basically I want to cover the cost of the remaining road tax, so we're looking at about £70, or, I can reclaim the tax and practically give it away.. Can anyone take it and break it? Silly offers now considered - £20 anyone??
