MK1's: 343 DL special and 343 16v

Post by pistonpen paultje »

In England, you don't see them a lot. MK1's. Here in the Netherlands, there are some left...But not many too...I happen to have 2 now.

Here's the '77 343 DL special

It's a car, build for the Swedish market. But the sales weren't that great over there, so it was sold in the Netherlands, to a volvo mechanic. He owned the car till 2005. Look at the headlight wipers, tipical :D

This is a very early 343. It has the very first brown dash. and even the DAF seats (not in the car right now, needs restauration)

Looks like this:
Image

the first owner did a lot of things to it. Lowered and koni'ed it. Added a lot of toy's to it...I placed other rims, did some rust-restauration, a backspoiler and some other little things.

This is how I bought the car:

The rearscreen cover came of yesterday...I still have it, and goes on again;)

Then the 343 16v...

Still a project, and still very ugly...That's going to change in the future.

I have my 16v engine laying in the shed. And Im waiting to have a little more time and money. So I'll start probably at the end of the summer. When Ive sold my other car (a volvo amazon/p121) The car will get build up as a racer. So nothing more than 2 bucketseats in there, and hopefully a nice rollbar. Then the 16v engine comes in, with a 5spd manual gearbox. Eventually I want to restore the car to a nice and tidy racer. But thats probably going to take a couple of years.

That's an awesome collection of cars, Paultje!

Deeply impressed with what you have done with the red one, and looking forward to seeing the grey one warmed up.

That red car is absolutely stunning - my favourite Mk1 I've seen!

Absolutely stunning! Agreed, that is the best Mk1 I've seen! That is IMO how they were intended to look with all the kit and what works well! The 16v project sounds interesting too!

The first mk1 looks great!

Do you have photos of the "DAF seats"?

Fantastic car, pistonpen paultje! Chrome door handles, wow ... Are the door mirrors from a later model?

Good on you mate. The DAF seats with the "all-in-one" headrests were only fitted in '76 and '77 so they're probably pretty rare ...

What are the chances of being able to pick up a fairly rust-free mk1 for reasonable money from over the channel?

cheers

They pop up every once in a while in Germany, Austria, Luxemburg ... But your best bet would be Holland I'm sure, perhaps with the help of some of the Dutch V3M people ...

Did you bid on this one?

That looked astounding, and was RHD ...

A couple of LHD 343s on offer at the moment:

http://auto-diversen.marktplaats.nl/ond ... -1979.html

Rustfree OR reasonably priced, but not both :-)

£2500 for a rust free one? Good grief. I'm not sure that £300+ for a scruffy one is any better, but it's in the right ball-park - and it's the right model/year. Having to change to RHD is a hassle though.

I still can't believe I didn't buy that £250 one which came up :( I'm fast coming to the conclusion (with all sorts of things) that if you're in doubt, you should go for it, even if it'll be a hassle, etc. Opportunities are not to be missed.

Perhaps I'll speak to my man in Germany ;)

cheers

The cars posted, are way to expencive...I bought mine for 400 euro's, and it has LPG, wich makes it worth about twice as much...

I know of one, its in the NL, only with Belgium licence plates on it. It's cheap over here, because it still needs importing, you would have that anyway. Its reasonably rustfree, has a spot underneath the windscreen, but thats about it. It's a grey '79 automatic (with special decals like mine) with a little more than 100k on it and has an original sliding roof (?? thats the direct translation, dont know the exact word:P). Cost would be about 200 euro's...Need info, PM me
