front spring poundage and height

Post by Johnny A »

Hello guys, wonder if anyone can help.

Got a 340 1.4 DL, want to lower it but with extra weight on the front end in mind:

Current setup: 1.4 engine, standard ride height
Wanted setup: 2.3 Redblock 16v engine (heavier), 10mm drop from current.

In actual fact I would imagine fitting this engine would drop it the required 10mm, but the poundage is too low currently.

So I'd need springs that provide the ride height I want with a higher poundage.

I also have very little idea what sort of poundage I would need, it's a daily driver with the occasional track day. I am thinking 300ft-lb's but thats a guestimate.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
John.

Dai is the one you want to talk to, he'll sort you out with springs :)

Are you planning to put the 2.3 in the 340; how much have you looked into this?

It'd be far easier to get a 360 to put the redblock into as it's a straight swap, except a few bits like oil sump you need from the 360's engine. In a 340 it's be much easier to put some kind of Renault engine.

Anyway, I'm sure you realise this, so good luck with the project

Already own the 340 so am using it for the conversion.

Renault engines = french which IMHO are shite and unreliable, yes it's a generalisation but it's not unfounded so I am sticking with it.

300lbs too much?? What would you recommend??

Play with this and try to get into 2.2-2.4Hz

300lbs, hmm is that something like 134400N/m(units used in spreadsheet) = 1344 N that is roughly 136kg? That would be about twice what one should have if it is so, 200lbs would then be max, but there is many things to consider, what dampers to use and how much suspension travel there is going to be, you don't like to car bottom out.

This seems to convert some units, but it is always bit difficult to find proper conversions between different units, so for example LBF to Newton conversion need to be multiplied by 100 to get proper unit or then I lost track in units again... http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/ncri ... force.html

Springs are rated in lb/inch, right? I have 300 and something ones in my (non-fitted) coilovers and my understanding from the guy who sold them was that they are really stiff for a 300. This was a 360 with an 8v redblock turbo, so not much heavier than your 16v redblock.

cheers
