1.4 Starter Motor required for 1.4 340 1990 please.

Hi, not been around much lately, too much work, lots of other things going on, etc, but I'm still a Volvo 300 Maniac. Somehow I've managed to find some time to help out a 300 owner who was sent my way after his variomatic failed. He'd described the problem and from the description it sounded like the drive belts had gone. It had stoodf for a while before he'd been put in contact with me. So when I got to look at it, the chap had recharged the battery and tried to get it running, apparently it turned over ok, but wouldn't start. So he started fault finding and by the time I got there the starter had given up. It was making the loud clicking noise, as it appeared that the drive gear was getting stuck and wasn't retracting. So, cleaned all the connections up just in case, and it stopped doing anything, then got it to retract by turning the engine from the bottom pulley bolt. Then it started clicking again. So took it off, got some WD40 around it and got it working well off the car. Put it back on, it turned the car over for about 2 seconds and got stuck again!

So........ does anyone have a spare, good condition working starter motor for a 1.4 340 of the 1990 era, so not an early car? The price of a new one from our local parts shop is silly money and the chap can't afford that, especially as we've other problems to get over too! Please let me know......

Should be able to, I'm not sure when I'm back on the island Pete, might be this weekend, might not be, but I'll try and find where it is (hopefully still on the block, can't remember if I had to remove it) and we'll go from there

Cheers chaps. To move things along I found one on Ebay. Not sure of the quality, but it looks ok like a newly reconditioned one. We'll see how that goes!

Get involved Pete, I was only home for 20 hours, of which some were sleeping and 10 was with family who'd come to visit! If it's super urgent I can try and sort something out though!

Cheers mate! New starter on, and turning over nicely. Rear fuel pipes perished and now replaced with fuel injection ones, front section to the fuel pump someone has already done. New fresh fuel added as the old stuff smelt super stale and has been stood about a while. Anyway, back tomorrow to try and fit the new clutch. I think the old one is properly FUBAR. It seems to be jamming things up and bits of material falling out of the shimming inspection hole!

re fuel lines on top of tank... dya have to lower the tank to sort these or can they be easily accessed via the boot panel? my 340 1.7 has a *nice* leak from the top of the tank.....

Fuel lines are simple to sort with no tank removal required Shimon.

SHORT ANSWER! No need to drop the tank, undo from above in the boot floor hole, remove, undeneath the car guide them out to the n/s, replace and guide back and reconnect!

FULLY EXPLAINED METHOD - Simply lift the boot carpet up, remove the three screws in the black round plate, and you'll see the two connections, label them or only do one at a time, but easier if both are removed at once so they don't get caught up, but don't muddle them up. Anyway, take the one piece clips off, they're useless once removed! Makes sure you buy fuel injection hosing of the right internal diameter and some new hose clips. So then you can lie under the car, probably best it the rear is put up on some axles stands, and you should see the two plastic fuel lines heading towards the tank from the n/s ish of the car over the fuel tank. Once they are disconnected from the tank, you can if your hands are small enough reach in from the back of the car, (from underneath) over the tank and then guide them towards the n/s of the car and out to where you can see them. Remove the other one piece clips, and remove the pipe, make sure the internal metal piece to prevent the plastic pipe being crushed isn't lost. Cut new lengths of pipe, reattach the car end with the hose clamps and guide back into place, or you can push them over the tank and locate through the hole and tighten the hose clamps to the tank connection. Simple enough!

Obviously all info given in good faith, if you're not sure, get someone who knows what they are at involved or get a reputable garage to do the job for you, we are dealing with fuel here........
