renault engines
I know this subject appears to dominate the forums but i'm looking to repower my 340 the 1.7 was that shocked at receiving an oilchange and filter it decided to start burning oil at a huge rate
Ok it did get a more open exhaust system at the same time but i'm thinking thats likely not the cause i'm reading posts about 1.8 renault units but its not one we got here i've been exploring and to date i've located renault 19's in abundance in the wreckers yards--a couple of bx citroens and if i want to spend a lot more clio 2 litre can be had but not that certain they could be adapted i'm best to stick i guess to commonly available engines here and would rather not throw a 1.7 renault 19 unit back into it whats not helping me is that renaut stopped importing cars here about 1982 the fuego was the last model here in any quantity only to start agin with the clio/megane in the past few years 19 models are about in wreckers yards but have never seen one on the road and they have a terrible record nobody will touch them due to unreliabilty issues many makers have done that in the past sold cars then not provided parts backup renault being a prime example theres an option i guess to make an adapter plate for the thing and slot a nissan 2 litre in it but would rather not go japanese if it is possible another option i've thought of is transplant an entire 360 glt drivetrain but that woluld be a huge task hesitant to use renault motors as its likely they will pull out of Australia as theyve done before guess it saves them providing backup -- get in sell cars then run before they need repairs

Baz,
the renault lump is a fairly good motor. I've had some quite high milage cars that have been ok. Butning oil after the oil change suggest an oil issue.
The renault 19 1.8 16 valve is simplish conversion to do. With the age of these engines dont worry about parts supply as it is very common and covered well be the secondary market.
The 360 running gear will bolt in and probably only take you a couple of days. If you want extra go put in a 2.3 out of a 240 or 740 with 360 running gear.

re engine death
I'm guessing the old 340 was filled with stop smoke or similar as i used castol gtx in it at the oil change for no particular reason but the 360 acording to its log book has always run that oil My plans were always to make a fun car from the 340 just had to do it sooner than planned
I'mstill looking at my options my landlord owns a renault scenic with a twin cam 2 litre engine and lucky for me is a car nut-- he has alfa's and also early volvos in his collection and is very keen to assist with my building a car that can go as good as it looks
He's a qualified ferrari mechanic so with our combined knowlege a fun car should be the result I'm still in the process of finding what engines are available in this country
Next wekend the lump is coming out of his scenic just to see if its a possibilty good for him too as it's cambelt is due and i get to measure the thing up at the same time
we both benefit as he gaets a cambelt installed i get up close and personal with the engine

I think the scenic is the later engine. The easy way to tell is the starter is on the other side to the 340 lump.

Get the £40 one from Machine Mart, it's been holding my tubby since Easter
Same lump and the 16v, and really well built for the money.

Wouldn't have thought there would be any difference in it, my engine came from a MK1 clio which obviously came after the 19's so I would have thought that engine would fit fine dude!kaos wrote:hey sorry to bump this.
Got the chance to buy a renault 19 today! its the correct engine afaik. its a 1993 renault 19 16V
will this fit okay in my 89 or do i need to go for an even older 16v pre 90?
