brakes

Post by Janitor »

has any1 changed there brakes at all ? front or rear ?
i know of various ways ,all with 240 4 pot calipers but different discs!
Volkswagen Corrado G60 vented, grooved and drilled. EXPENSIVE
Honda Prelude 2.0i 16v 87-91 vented and grooved.MIDDLE
Vauxhall Carlton vented.CHEAP
i had a rotten 240 estate which i took the calipers/servo etc off and the breaker took the
rest, the calipers i cleaned/overhauled and used carlton discs! i have heared people use
astra(kadette?)gte front 4 pots too, but have never seen proof !!
this is for an opel but it is exactly the same for 340/60.

I've never researched it that much. I'd guess the 400 series
ones more or less drop straight on to the 300 hubs, but more drastic alterations would be
required for other (more extreme) set ups. The main issues that spring to mind are:
a) Fitment of cailiper to hub
b) Clearance of hub & disc within wheel
c) Offset of disc relative to hub
I know people running BMW E30 3-series, VW Corrado G60, and Cosworth brakes...but all
these need work to get them to fit.
I guess it depends on your application. For me the power is fine, but the stock brakes fade too
soon, so I'm going to vented discs (400 series) when I get the chance. You might want to
choose the 4-pot brembos from the Corrado for track use.

Thanks for the reply.
I wont be using the car for track so I think Il just find a scrap yard that has a 440/460/480
turbo and take the front discs and calipers off it then see if they fit the hubs on the 360. My
360 already has over sized nuts on it and 5mm spacers on the front as I have fitted 17''
alloys on it
I will buy some Tarox vented, cross drilled & grooved discs if I can get the 400 series type
to fit.

Volvo 400 series are all front wheel drive. That might be a
problem regarding disc and caliper conversions.
I am going to a scrap yard this weekend so I am going to see what the hubs are like on a 400
and see if they are similar to the 360

The hubs are remarkably similar from 300>400 series...I'd
be surprised if they don't fit more or less straight off.
Do you have any pics of your 360 in 17s? I've just trial fitted late 440 15" T5-like alloys to
mine....looks the mutts nuts...(well...given that I'm going for a 'stock' look..) Pics to follow...
Wilwood = Very pie...and an extremely tasty pie too!

I havent got any pics yet because it still looks a mess apart
from the 17s and the smoked indicators, clusters & debadging. When I have my custom
grille and removed the door rubbing strips Il take a pic so people on the forum can see. It will
be by no doubt the best looking 300 series with all the money I am throwing at it.
Kinds regards,
Al

I've found in the past that smoking just the indicator lenses
works best, as a jet-black look across them all doesn't work too well. I've been trying to
track down clear lenses for the front especially - I might well try making some by pressing
softened acrylic into a wooden mould.
Someone desperately needs to do a really good styling job on a 300 before it is completely
forgotten by the modification scene - its got a good shape, but that ugly front end and
conservative 'soft styling' (bumpers, etc) let it down.
Have you seen that white 340 'evo' with what look like S70 bumpers? The front is WRONG,
but the back looks really damn sweet. That's the best one I've seen so far. I await your
photos with interest!
cheers

Yep, Ive seen that "Evo" 340, the front end indeed looks
very strange, like its a toy car or something.
There are hardly any modified 300s on the net, most people just leave them stoc.
I have seen one with clear indicators on it though, Im not sure how they have done that, I
wouldnt have thought you can buy them anywhere?
Its certainly a challenge modifying one of these cars as everything needs a massive overhaul
on it. What I really like about the 300s is the back end, it looks really mean when you smoke
the rear clusters and debadege it, even people who are not lovers of my car admire the back
end. I am hopefully going to remove the numberplate from the boot and make the centre flush
and relocate the plate to the rear bumper, maybe even have a square plate instead of the
rectangular one.
I will put some pics of my car from all angles when I have removed the rubbing strips and fitted
the mesh grille, that way at least I will have broken up that very volvo 300 looking shape up a
little and made it more streamlined.
Greetings,
Al.

Was the one with clear indicators red? If so, its a
photoshop...
The beauty of the 300 series is that they're *so* underrated. They're the laughing stock of
the Max Power brigade (one if their favourite targets, in fact), and few people see it
coming...I've decided to keep mine looking almost totally stock, as I think that makes the
most of the surprise (although I'm tempted to make a 400-turbo engined 340 with serious
styling).
....Yet there is so much potential - damn near 50/50 front-rear weight distribution, RWD, and
200bhp STOCK engines that more or less drop straight in. Those engines can be made to hit
250 very easily, 300 with minor modifications, and 400bhp is hardly difficult in the grand
scheme of things. The internal components are supposedly good for 500bhp as stock. Having
said that, for fast launches you need to swap the torque tube at 250bhp, and the gearbox at
300. However, Kev Strong is reportedly running 400bhp in his for this season...and that's
through a totally stock drivetrain (albeit on rolling starts, etc).
Leave the peasents to their ignorance....I shall observe it in my rear view mirror :) Shame about
the aerodynamics....

Damn photoshoppers!!! Your car looks nice, its in better
condition than mine anyway judging from the pic.
The Max Power brigade need sm72 In their book if you cant "bolt on" a modifaction its
crap. They only go for stupid girly cars like 106s, Saxos, 206s, puntos etc. Theres just no joy
driving them, ok they handle well, thats only because they are tiny little womens cars and they
dont go fast enough to go sideways :o)
Have you got any more pics of your car and what mods have you done and what are you
planning for her?
Kind regards,
Al

Here are a few more pics...

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/photopost/d ... s4-med.JPG
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/photopost/d ... s2-med.JPG
The mods are less than fundamental...
Exterior:
Its got 440 Canis 15" alloys (as you can see), GLT front lip, body coloured grille surround (too
subtle...grille is a work in progress...probably end up black meshed but still with the slash),
headlight interiors painted black (very subtle, but makes the lamps look noticably less
yellow).....oh....and a very very messy (rusty & bent) sunroof! (New one on the way)
Interior:
Pioneer HU, 150wrms power amp (doesn't sound impressive, but that's an honest
measurement, not 'kenwood watts'), double 10" sub in a large box (good bass extension).
Full gauge kit (econ & ambient temp, oil temp & pressure). Leather on the way...
Planned:
B230ET/FT 200bhp turbo lump
Leather
Aircon
Factory bodykit
(last three are when I find them...about to pick up back-half of leather interior!)
If you want an econ/ambient temp gauge kit, I've got several for sale - £50 for both gauges
& fitting kit (£300 at the dealers!...if you can get it! nuts...)
cheers
