So since driving I have always had a loud clanking sound when releasing the clutch or accelerator, my dad says its the universal joints that need fixing.

So long story short It was getting louder and when i went to shift it into third it finally gave way. It no longer drives as in gear when acceleratng it makes a grinding sound like that of a drill. its is coming from the front of the engine. Starting the car it makes the same sound until u clutch it.

currently the car is @ home with engine slowly being pulled apart.

That sounds more like prop than engine

That's the sound that failed torque tube bearings make, by reputation. Never heard it myself...

My 340 makes a clanking kind of sound when i release the clutch pedal too, but i assumed it came from a worn clutch since it slips a bit... but could this be a serious problem?

although my clutch did not slip i would be very cautious about the clanking sound as it was the only thing wrong with my car which i blame as a result of it breaking, in fact i was going to post a topic about it but ended up not doing it thinking it might have been getting fixed sooner.

the car is currently without an engine but to get to the bellhousing we have to go through the back as well!!!!

So i might have to replace the universal joint (and probably the prop too)? And in order to do that i need to pull both the engine and the rear axle out? Not menioning finding parts for the job

I'll just drive carefully till it breaks then.. as they say in sweden, "Jäg gasar tills det rasar".. I'm selling this spring / summer anyway.

360s and 340s are different underneath...and a 340 is much easier to fix when it comes to this sort of problem. I'm not exactly sure what's causing your problem without hearing the sound.

How loud is it? Can you hear where it comes from? What does it sound like?

Changing a clutch on a 340 is pretty quick, if it all goes smoothly.

I can record it? It's a "clank" kind of sound. It's loud enough for a passenger to hear, and you don't need to listen carefully to hear it.

If it's just a clunking sound when out of gear and releasing the clutch, all 340's do it, it's nothing major!

Record the sound and we'll have a listen if you want piece of mind!

My 1.4 made two noises...one was the clutch cable hitting the bonnet (hehe!), and the other was the gearbox hitting the body when the rear mounts had failed. That was LOUD though, and happened worst when lifting off the accellerator in reverse.

Oh Well it doesn't make the sound when the engine's not running, and it usually occurs when shifting from one gear to another. And i _think_ it's worse when the engine's warm, but not sure. I'll do my best to record it later..

Okay my sound isn't a "clank" at all, it's a short grinding noise, sounds like the clutch plates scream when they hit each other. The sound is very similar to a broken fan belt, except it's only there when you release the clutch when the engine's running and the car is in gear. It stops when you put your foot off the clutch.

The culprit was the splines on the driveshaft being chewed. car should be back on the road in a couple of days
