Cam & carb swap in B200K

Post by Pappa »

Hi! If i change the camshaft in a B200K to a K-cam, do i need to change the carb too, or will it run fine with the stock?

Also, will any K cam fit, or do i need the kind that can drive a distributor? I know one for sale, but it doesn't have a distributor "gear", is the distributor independent of the camshaft in the B200K? (I'm not native english speaking, hope you know what i mean).

I'm picking up a '86 360GL tomorrow, hardly any rust on it, and it's only rolled 40k :D Looking to have some fun with it though, so a cam swap is in order..

Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to V3M hopefully this will answer all of your questions.

The K-cam will fit just fine into a b200k engine and there is no need to worry about the notch to fit a distributor as in the 360 the distributor is not head mounted like in 740's and 940's.

After fitting it the carb won't need to be replaced but definitely re-tuned as the idle will be pretty "lumpy". However I would recommend looking into fitting a bigger and more reliable carb setup to the engine as the standard solex on the b200k is very restrictive. I'd recommend using twin 40 webers or solexes to provide most power, allegedly 140bhp (though he hasn't had the carbs tuned and the dyno may not have factored much transmission loss in ;)).

Okay, I'll buy the K cam then, since the price isn't too bad. I figure the original carb would "work", but i guess the flow would be restricted to some degree? What's the easiest to fit and cheapest to buy carb that will have adequate flow?

Oh, and what performance gains can i expect from a K cam? The engine is rated at 101 HP i think, do you think 120hp would be too much to expect if i fit a K cam, destroy the cat and remove the muffler? Is the exhaust worth upgrading on these things?

It all depends on what you're aiming for, i'd imagine a good K-cam alone would put you fairly close to 120bhp as I think my engine (A-cam) is putting out about 108-110bhp-ish I always imagined the exhaust design to be restrictive but not at the power levels we're talking about.

It is definitely worth considering a twin solex/weber setup if you want to make a worthwhile carb upgrade as there is little else to choose from. (although you could possibly fit another downdraft style weber by redrilling the manifold/carb base, but I don't think anyone has investigated this)

Okay then, but would fitting a new carb be a lot of work, or just simple bolt off bolt on? What would be the best carb for the job, and any chance of finding one on the scrapyard? I've heard you can find a weber 36/36 on ford granada's and fit it on the B200K straight on, only thing you gotta do is drill bigger holes in the carb to fit the bolts from the original carb?

Also, is it normal for the stock engine to seem almost dead up until a point (3500rpm or so) and then die off again at around 5000? Screams for a new cam if so :p

Um, not sure on that one as my engine is a bit of a frankenstein so I have never driven a stock b200k, but I'm sure the torque should be much further down than that, sounds like you already have a K-cam if your power is spread like that. It could just be the carb not fueling correctly.

I have no idea about the granada carb, I was going to try and fit a 38/38 dgas to mine, but a much better engine came along so I'm putting my efforts into that now. I still have the carb, but I take it you are not in the uk?

My car made 115whp....and the computer thought that was approximately 140bhp. That's with a K cam and Solex ADDHE 40s.

The carbs will make the biggest difference...so I'd do those first.

cheers

The std 360 carb is pretty poor. I agree with James that swapping the carbs would be first job.

Okay, but can anyone recommend a suitable carb that will fit right on the intake? I heard a Weber 36/36DCD does, all you need to do is drill holes in the foot of the carb since the original holes are too small. I understand this should keep up to around 140HP, which should be adequate. Failing that i can get a Weber 60 and a 48 for scraps, but i imagine it'd be a lot of work to make them fit..

The best bet is to go for twin webber or even solex carbs. I can get the manifold to fit these on with
