Has anybody got a spare catch for the drivers' door of a 4 door 300 series? The catch being the metal strap and roller thing that stops the door opening too far.

I've trawled the local breakers, but so far have yet to meet one that knows what a 300 is. "Is that the estate" was one....

yup, that's pretty close! The one on my car differs slightly in that the twisted strap [if that is what it is called!] isn't twisted. Not sure if it makes a difference though?

I seem to need the whole assembly bar the bracket attached to the car. No idea why it is missing - a bizarre thing to remove.

probably snapped and was then removed to stop the two broken "ends" from doing any damage

Door does look a bit squiffy I'll admit.

I've been contacting the breakers around here for bits, but strongly suspect that unless you want an engine, axle or lights, then they are not interested. Whatever happened to those happy days when you used to pop around with a spanner, remove the small item you wanted, and put some change [ahem!] in the charity box? [OK, put the item secretly into your pocket....] Guess health & safety stopped all that, but does it mean that cars like ours die because of being unable to remove stuff that others can't be arsed too?

[And I've noticed that breakers lie as well. 'phone them up for a part, they say yes, got it no worries. Get there, and the response is "what's a 360 then?" Some of these yards in London are, well, in truly lovely locations. Very bijou.]

You'd be surprised how annoying it is to not have that little stay - you try getting out of the car on a heavy camber with a Volvo door pushing you back! I feel like Mr Bean at times. Sure I look like him as well....

So take pity on me, and find one of those sodding catches!!

I might be able to help you out here! They are a bit of a pig to remove, from memory it's a case of a undo the allen headed bolts with a short allen key so you can get in there, then wriggle it about carefully so it comes out of the door, as it is very close to the guide for the glass! On my original GLT the strap had been disconnected so it was floating in the door. As you say, very annoying, and hard not to let it crunch into the wing. So I reconnected it and found out why they had done it. It had worn so it made a really loud click as it jumped over the worn part of the stay. It couldn't have been doing anything much good. I did manage to replace it. Remind me in a day or two and I'll see if I can find a good one on a door to remove for you!
