Hi peoples,

Recently got a brand spanking solex carb off ebay for £60 for my 87' 1.7 340 fitted it with no real problems but i'm left with 2 hose connections with nothing to connect them too

its been running fine with them not conencted to anything and no air filter assembly (it doesnt fit back over the new carb properly mod required.)

they can be seen arrowed in the pic below



what should i do with these lol? im assuming they are just breathers for something but i have no idea about carbs so id like to be safe

I can't remeber for sure but I have a feeling its beather hose.

One of the connects to teh air filter housing and teh other to the engine breather.

I could be wrong need checking to be sure!!

unless its for something like coolant, it works as it is. I'll just breather them lol

Are they connected to each other? What happens if you blow through them? where does the air go?

I've not got a 340 with that carb on about to check against.

I have no knowledge on them, but the first thing that sprung to my head was carb heating/cooling. Apparently older carbs had water heating/cooling, but newer ones electric?

blowing thro just seems to come out of the actual air inlet, possibly coming through the other one slightly, hard to tell (blowing either gets same effect) so that must rule coolant out?

If i am reading those threads right MJ they refer to coolant blocks on the bottom of the carb, and the hot air feed switcher thing is in the air filter assembly?

After the "blow test" it would seem they would only carry air/gas but for what reason i dont know lol.

Well after the Blow Job I think we can asume they are engine breathers

you may have a 440 carb some which have a system to combat carb overheating and drains away expanded fuel to the wing area so you need the pipes connected or you may get petrol dripping on the exhaust causing a fire!

The one in the foreground is an overflow drain from the float chamber. I would just stick a spare bit of fuel hose onto it and route it round the back of the clutch housing or whatever. The other one has something to do with the idle jet but I've no idea what it does, only that if you block it off whilst the engine is idling the revs drop slightly. I don't think its all that important to connect a hose to this one, but definitely connect a hose to the other one if anything happens with the float or needle it'll save fuel spraying all over your hot engine.
