Hi Hugh, cant be sure in your case but usually it gos like this .If Dougle was left at the side of the road , councils will often tow away vehicles involved in accidents ,without giving notice, on health and safety grounds. They are obviously worried about injuries to third parties (i.e.cuts from sharp edges etc and ensuing law suits .which wouldnt be the case with a normal car that has just been dumped (hence not such a rush to remove them).Check with the council and police a.s.a.p in case they hit you with towing / storage charges. If it was on private land, they should not have touched it before contacting you unless there were no registration plates on it to trace you by.

it was a loss anyway, i'd already nicked most of the bits off it i could, the only thing on it were 3rd brake light, wheels/nuts and the headlight wipers. saves me paying to scrap it

That is strange! Wonder why anyone would tow a smashed 300 with a load of parts missing! Could have a look around local scrappies? It will ateast be an easy car to spot...

Banger racers possibly - It`s quite easy to pull out fairly big dents if you`re not too worried about what it looks like.
May also have been a scrappy - despite them continuing to charge to scrap cars, scrap steel has soared in value recently due to the chinese buying up every bit they can get. Or so I heard ...

not worth the hassle really, there was only ~£50 of bits left on it

wont have been banger racers. the front tracking was wellllll out (possible fucked suspension) and the dents could not have been pulled.. if you saw it you'd be surprised anything worked on it.
