please help!!! i can't get my 1.7 running right

Hi everyone, ive owned my volvo 340 for about 3 months. ever since i got it it has had a eratic idle.
sometimes it will drive and work fine and idle bang on 1k but then other times it can be idling at virtually 0 and i have to run with the choke pulled out.
I have tried many times to try and get it running right but it just isnt working. Ive put a new idle solenoid on. someone said they should click when the ignition is turned on.
i hear no clicking, is there a particular way your meant to test this?
ive also made sure all the hoses are tight around the carb.
i initially thought the idle screw may just be coming loose over time but then sometimes it will be cutting out but then be fine later, so that rules that out.
under the idle solenoid there is another spade connection with no wire going to this, its at the base of the carb. should there be a wire to this? my car is a 1.7 1987 340
the guy before me had trouble with the carb and fitted a different carb. the floats were the problem initially.
what do you think the problem could be. it doesnt matter wether its hot or cold its still the same. sometimes works fine and then suddenly the revs can drop really low so i have to drive with the choke on.
im getting really fed up with it but love the car so want to get it working.
it seems pretty lumpy too, where abouts is the idle mixture screw. i couldnt see it when i adjusted the idle speed.
id appreciate any advice you can give me = D
sorry about the mass of text
