Curious re: 1.7 & power steering

Post by bogbasic »

Hello,

did any of the 1.7's have power steering?

Cheers, bogbasic.

Nope. One or two have cropped up that were given some aftermarket treatment, but never from the factory AFAIK. Having said that I'm sure it's possible to fit an electric pump to a factory power rack no matter which engine you have. Something I've been thinking of but not really investigated further.

I have a original PAS rack of a B14 (complete set), and im probably building it in combination with my 16v engine. I want to use the 16v pump.

If this works out, then it would also work on a 1.7...

Also with a valver you will struggle to locate the pump because of the inlet manifold.

Which bits get in the way? Is it the pipes or is the whole rack just too big? I didn't even consider that it would be a problem. Should be ok for the B14 though, which is what I was really bothered about, would like to add PAS to my vario because the steering's a bit heavy for my poor old dad.

hi yes there is not enough room for the rack on a 1.7
1.4 no problem... just use the rack and pipes AND the lower column from a 360
you will need to find a suitable pump and resorvoir and also adapt the crank pulley

I was going to say I'd seen and heard of 1.4's having had PAS added but not 1.7's, that explains that then! Mine on my vario was an aftermarket kit fitted at nearly new, costing nearly £1000 at the time!
