Chris' Current Daily - Jet

As some of you know, I've got a new 300 (bringing me to 3 again for a while  )

Fake has done a great job this last year, and between Me, Rich and Fake we've done really well in the Uni rallying championship, taking the cup with maximum points. However, I have been slightly (just a teeny bit) rough with the car and it's small rust problem became a rather more structural crack towards the end. It's nothing major, but certainly wouldn't have happened if I wasn't pushing it. Just as I finished doing that job, Mr MOT man said he wanted the other side de rusted as well and I don't have time to put to it currently.

So, off I hunt for a cheap daily with some tax and ticket. Firstly... when did cars go up?? Me and Hugh used to bid 99p on an ebay 300 because it had some bit of trim we wanted, then get worried when it looked close to us having to find somewhere to put them! Hugh got at least one 99p car, I got a free one, and loads we were outbid and sold for £1.04!!!

The only car I could find that looked anything like near the bill was a old submarine shaped carb Saab 900 which had been owned by a Saab nut. Mr Nut had just bought a new car and needed driveway space, so this car was going for a song. Armed with pennies, off I set, only to be intercepted whilst putting my shoes on by a phone call from Mr Farrell. He had heard of my predicament, and had rung to see if anything in Farrell Towers suited the bill. Vast quantities of Volvo's were described, when all of a sudden he mentions a black 360 GLT that had tax and ticket until Sept, and just needed a bit of cosmetic tidying. This was... sometime last week, so I asked Pete to bring it along to the V3M meet last Sat for me to have a look at.

Overall, she's really nice. Fogs weren't working, headlamp wipers on the nearside is resting up (suspected drivers side motor been used), sunroof didn't work, and a few other likewise non really important for what I wanted bits.

So, and to quote me from 3/4 years ago
Me, then wrote:I'm going to keep this one standard, it's only a driver whilst I fix Kar
Me, now wrote:I'm going to keep this one standard, it's only a driver whilst I fix Fake so I can use that as a driver whilst I fix Kar
Apart from in the last 3 years I've really got into this motorsport lark, so there is a new plan (well, for now anyway)

I'll keep Jet as a daily, and fix Motorsport Fake. That way I don't need rear seats, or comfortable front seats, or fuel economy, or anything else silly and boring. I have uncomfortable seats, and cage, and Adam has been sorting me an engine.

Then, I keep both, whilst I fix Kar. Then I have comfortable daily Fast Kar, and Fake, and sell/break Jet depending on what state she's in.

That plan will likely change tomorrow. So far I've fixed Jet's foglamps (relay, bad earth, and bad connections on the multiplug), re aligned the sunroof so it works, replaced all the dash bulbs, fixed the boot light. I'd forgotten how much more fun fixing things that really don't need to be done is! Have just swapped some tyres for a new HU too (re emergence of another Wessex MC 300 is likely today or tomorrow).

Not bad in an afternoon's work. Plenty of those niggles are waiting for me to sort them too

Congrats on the new car!

360 = reliability win (touch wood).

I'm about to buy a 960 while my S70 is...er...being a big lump of broken. I'm thinking that a nice 360 would be a better idea, though...

cheers

i took a closer look at the 360 gl near me, it was bit beaten up and rusting but im sure it will run forever. I also spotted a redline going past when i was in the bus my facination probabky confused some of the passengers  . Spotted a white 300 mk2 with the glt alloys painted in white yesterday its cool that they are still around.

& Since when did you own an s70?

I bought the S70 2 years ago...it's my daily beater / work car. Trouble is, it's been going wrong continuously lately.

cheers

Well, it is FWD and they start with wrong tires every morning, so no wonder they are getting wrong. Same with my 'daily', MOT guy did run out of space from MOT failure form so he let some of stuff out from it

Will update more later as away from home, can confirm 300's need a box/diff guard before they need sumpguards.

I thought that was the case

Rupert... you were right about that white road...

So...want a gearbox? :-P I've just had a pair of 360s delivered, including a black F plate GLT. I see lucrative business...;)

I *should* be ok but put me down just in case mate! Basically, I hit a lumpy bit just in the wrong place, it's hit the exhaust, petrol tank heat shield, and dragged back along the edge of the gearbox (not doing any harm luckily, just a minor skim and filleted the edge) then dragged through the diff plate fixing flange on the diff casing, bending the diff plate up at the corner.

I was out with parents today, and when I drove off, I got a phone call saying there was a fair sized puddle of oil under the rear axle, when I looked it had magically moved to where the car was now. The white chalk on the cuts tells me exactly where it is, Rupert was in the car and uttered some expletives at the time, but I've not had damage before doing the same. Live and learn.

Currently have cleaned it up, bent plate back into shape and topped diff up (though filler is unfreeable, so poured diff oil in through the breather box thing). I have a spare low mileage 340 box in the garage which I'll steal the cover plate from on Monday and fill the diff properly as luckily I have a Mac gasket kit on the shelf. Have now banned self from offroading Jet, that is for Fake with her nice guards on!

(pictures to come, but they need de-raw-ing and it's late!)

EDIT: Note to self as I'll forget otherwise, I think it could be due to the 340 fuel tank being lower, and thats what I normally skid on rather than the diff... will investigate tomorrow

Adam was saying at the meet that a 360 box sits at a different height to a 340 one. I can't remember if it's lower or higher though. I think lower...

cheers

I belive I remarked something along the lines of......

"Whoops, that doesn't sound very good. I fear you may find some damage to the underside of the car, possibly in either the sump or gearbox/diff area. It may be adviseable to keep an ear out for knocking or grinding noises and watch that temp gauge!!"

Now that's cool. I've actually once gotten a second A4 sheet because the list didn't fit on the first page. On the other hand, about 2/3 of them were rust problems (it was an Opel Omega -89 after all...)
