replacement carb volvo 340 for better performace and idle

Post by guitardudetom »

hi, i own a 1989 volvo 340 1.7 58.000 miles which it idles poorly. i took it to my mate who is good with volvos and he says my carb isnt working right and says these old carbs are not good and idling is a common issue with them. i know i can get a new replacement that is pritty much the same, but does anyone know if there is a better carb that will fit my egine that would give me better performace and idle better than the original ones? if you could help this would be much appreciated as i am finding it hard to get info on this subject. thanks

ive known them to idle really well.

youve probably got a dodgy carb rubber mount plate or the carb bolts have worked loose over the years

when a factory's engineering team spends years and years of development into making an optimal combination between ignition (renix) and carb setup (jet sizes, etc) you will never get the same results fitting another carb as with an original 1.7 carb from a 340! this combination has been perfectly setup in the full rpm range.

i'm not saying it can't be done, because volvo sees these carb settings (fuel economicy, efficiency) in a different way as with tuners (max horse power + torque!)

the problems you are describing could be a faulty floater, very well known problem on the 1.7. other than that it could be a bend carb foot so it's leaking vacuum there.

might also be a problem with the floater-cover gasket, wich you can check when removing the floater.

when remounting the carb, be sure that the 4 bolts will only be put tight at 14Nm, yes only 14Nm!!
