Hey everyone,

Once my car has been running for a while usually after some motor way action there is a loud whirring/screamish whirring noise which is emitted from the engine (i am thinking its the water pump) its rather annoying and goes away as soon as you accelerate or rev the engine but returns when you idle or cease accelerating.

Has anyone had anything like this or know what it could be?

Any help is appreciated Dan.

remove dizzycap and rotor, drop a few drops of lubricant/oil on the rotor-shaft where it meets the housing, hear if the noise is gone

Mine had such but only at certain rpm, it seems to be gone now as I did make timing belt tensioner spring little less strong.

Oh yes, this is 360, 340 1.4 had chain and 1.7 belt that is different than 360, so perhaps no help at all

If you want to check its not the water pump or alternator, take the alternator belt of and check briefly.

Yeah, could well just be the fanbelt. As Adam says running for 30 seconds or so without the belts will confirm where the noise is coming from. One other thought. How clean is your oil? The timng chain can potentially get noisy if the oil is dirty or flow is weak.

I have tried spraying some lubricant in the dizzy and it didnt work, So ill have a go at whipping the fan belt off at the weekend. it only happens when ive been on the motor way though which makes me think its something to do with the engine running in the higher rpm brackets for extended periods of time.

Any thoughts?
