After splitting the box to weld up the diff on my B19 360 it obviously needed new fluids, we filled 10/40 engine oil into the gearbox (approx. 2.5 litres, didn't have any more at the time but felt just under 'full')
The diff got Hypid 80/90 stuff, unsure how much as I never refilled it.
The car has been fine for a couple of weeks, bar slight weeping from the diff - box join on occasion. Not enough to lose anything serious.
Today it has started to whine, not loads but enough to concern me and to stop using it!
I am thinking/hoping this is down to not enough 80/90 in the diff.
As it transpires the gearbox should have ATF fluid (according to Haynes) Is this right? It would benefit from being flushed after having it apart anyway.
Is ATF the correct stuff to use in the gearbox? Also how many litres of each is required?
I assume the gearbox is like any other, fill it until it starts to run out of the filling hole?
Lastly, the fill plug for the diff would not come out and just rounded off, so we filled it from the breather. Does anyone know if it's possible to removed the diff back plate whilst in situ. on a car lowered 2"?
I will find out tomorrow I guess lol. It would be nice to extract the fill plug, as filling from the breather is less than ideal!
One final thing, do you think I will have damaged the diff? As it is clearly running on low/wrong viscosity oil!I have covered maybe 20 miles since it started to very lightly whine.
Thanks to John. Much appreciated mate
Cheers all, Liam.
