Whining 360 diff / which fluids please?

Post by OapEM »

Hello strangers! Little help/advice needed and appreciated here!
After splitting the box to weld up the diff on my B19 360 it obviously needed new fluids, we filled 10/40 engine oil into the gearbox (approx. 2.5 litres, didn't have any more at the time but felt just under 'full')
The diff got Hypid 80/90 stuff, unsure how much as I never refilled it.

The car has been fine for a couple of weeks, bar slight weeping from the diff - box join on occasion. Not enough to lose anything serious.
Today it has started to whine, not loads but enough to concern me and to stop using it!

I am thinking/hoping this is down to not enough 80/90 in the diff.

As it transpires the gearbox should have ATF fluid (according to Haynes) Is this right? It would benefit from being flushed after having it apart anyway.

Is ATF the correct stuff to use in the gearbox? Also how many litres of each is required?

I assume the gearbox is like any other, fill it until it starts to run out of the filling hole?

Lastly, the fill plug for the diff would not come out and just rounded off, so we filled it from the breather. Does anyone know if it's possible to removed the diff back plate whilst in situ. on a car lowered 2"?

I will find out tomorrow I guess lol. It would be nice to extract the fill plug, as filling from the breather is less than ideal!

One final thing, do you think I will have damaged the diff? As it is clearly running on low/wrong viscosity oil!I have covered maybe 20 miles since it started to very lightly whine.

Thanks to John. Much appreciated mate 8)

Cheers all, Liam.

It used to be right but the new recommendation is the 10/40 magnatec (that's from Volvo and Castrol, a thread on here somewhere).
Haynes should tell you the capacities for the box and diff, can't find my copy still :?
Get a mac diff gasket and capscrew kit, if you can get in touch with him on here. I'm sure someone will know his VOC username? The kits are mint and like £8 posted. I wouldn't worry about a bit of whining, our kid does it all the time and he's not bust a crownwheel yet.

Haynes has got no capacities from what I could seeeeeee

If the 10/40 is the way to roll now, I definitley need more of it lol. Wonder how much diff oil Ronnie and your boy got in before the pump gave up the ghost when we were getting the bait in!

Also, MSN much? :(

LMAO 'a new post has been made' with a quip like that it's gotta be our very own VND!

The difference is, it only whines, no bitching. So that's a plus.

I want it to cease! Leaving 11's is awesome :D

elevenses rock man.
Every pull away should be celebrated in this manner.

Mine does tiny pathetic ones that make me feel like half a man.

And not in the Robocop/kickass way.
More like the Stephen Hawking/ass kicked by a bored wife kind of way.

*New posts have been made.
This isn't going to make any sense now.
But I'm posting anyway.
It's meant to go after where Liam says about making 11s.

I did mine today 1 litre of evil smelling black crap out, 1.5 litre of nice new diff oil in. Diff capacity is 1.3 - 1.5 litre depending on the specific diff. You just keep squeezing it in until it overflows out the fill plug. Easy to check.

Your sadface emoticon symbol suggests that this is not a positive development.

Wire brush, penetrating oil over night, then heat, then heave. Mine needed quite a lot of force, I was worried I'd damage the diff cover, but in the end it moved.

Sounds like the gearbox fill plug on mine! That didn't want to shift!

Diff fill plug was slipping and rounding off, even with the correct key. Will try more lube lol

Thanks mate.

Don't be too sure its the fluid. I once had a 340 that whined when you slowed down in 2nd gear, mint 4 speed with low milage nearly new, bought it trade. It had had some history in the dealer who had pulled out the gearbox and diff for some other reason then claimed they could not cure the whine when it developed.

I pulled out both again and checked gearbox internals and found nothing, but on reassembly I remembered that the gasket that I had scraped of the diff was the one for the front of the gearbox and not the 'mechanical' gasket that is meant to fit between the diff and gear box. I had also borrowed depth micrometer from work and had done the shim calculation which appeared to be correct, but of course includes an allowance for the gasket. The wrong gasket was easily enough to upset the end clearance/preload on one of the gearbox shaft bearing that sits up against the diff casing. The proper gasket is a rigid paper type, the front gasket is a thicker type. The 4 speed is obviously slightly different but not massively, same principle applies.

Incidently I sold the car on for a £500 profit, and the new owner had also researched the car with the local dealer and 'knew' of the problem. I was pleased to tell him of the dealers mistake and that I had cured it.
