oops, wheres me back box gone !!!

Post by redline »

took the lad up to school in Coventry this morning, just turned into the road that gos to his school when I thought I heard a bit of a rattle at the back of the car ,. stopped to have a look and the back box is hanging on by the merest whisper of metal and touching tarmac , pulled it off and carried on my journey much to the annoyance of all those trying to sleeo in the neighbourhood . coarse then had to drive back to mk like it , not only did it sound sweet the engine revved and pulled better.got some strange looks from a bloke in a golf GTI in the next lane specially when I blipped the throttle ( I know i'm just a big kid ). he even dropped back to look at my rear end (bloody pervert ) Question is is it illegal not to have a back box coz I thought of getting just a straight pipe as a replacement ?

I don't think its illegal per se, but there is a noise limit that's imposed of so many decibels, and I reckon that they'd fail it on the next MOT.

The exhaust shouldn't really be that restrictive, unless it was the wrong one to start with. The fast fit exhaust places maybe only have a standard '340' exhaust which is voiced for the 1.4

I would get a Volvo kit, cost 100quid I know, but it will then last a good many years. Ours lasted about seven years on average.

I drove my car around for a few days without the rear box just before I replaced the whole system. Great for blipping the throttle around Nova drivers

The Volvo ones are good and last much better than the QuikSh*t type stuff.
I`m pretty sure my 88 340 is still on the original pipework as I`ve got a pile of reciepts for work done and servicing and there isn`t one for a new exhaust.

Quite a bit of work on the O/S front caliper though over the years - should I be worried?...

My back box just looks like back box but it is more like straight pipe, one can see trough it when it is removed from car. It had originally only 3cm tip but I put extension because exhaust was coming inside. Bad thing is that there is much less sound now, only when I floor throttle it starts to make grannys to shake their fists :P

Our maximum noise level is around 80db (or dbA ???) so no problem with single silencer ;)

My car was bad today, reverse gear stuck in, after few tryes I got it back to neutral, but now 3rd gear goes in very easy. All bushings from gearstick-gearbox thingy has been replaced around 3000km ago, but gearstick has loosen up very quickly :(

Also gasoline has been disappeared, 310km and I'm on reserve

Well, this is one of those mondays, like Garfield says, "I hate mondays".

AND you know that they've been 'voiced' for the engine, ie: not too restrictive.

On the caliper, for our cars, its always rear brake cylinders that leak, get stung for that almost every other MOT!!
