Ticking while driven in gear???

Hi, My car clicks when driving, when I take it out of gear and rev it (while still moving) the clicking stops.
It sounds like a chain or tappets but surely this wouldn't go away when out of gear?
The car is a 340 1.4 from 1989 and I have recently fitted a new clutch, and replaced the middle box with a bit of straight pipe.
Any advice would be of interest.

Could it be a simple as just the extra load on the engine makes it noisier

If its to do with engine load, it should also stop when slowing down or cruising maybe.
By putting the clutch in all you are doing is something to the clutch, so it could be there. Everything else is still rotating assuming you leave it in gear.
Also consider stone in tyre tread. Does it definitely go with engine speed?

The engine load thing makes sense, In neutral it doesn't do it and at steady cruising it doesn't do it. It only happens at full or close to full throttle. What surprises me is that when I went to adjust the tappets the clearance was fine. I couldn't get the feeler in. So would this be the timing chain or tensioner? The car has only done 55000 miles.

I am currently amidst the saga of putting the speedo cable back in, but It seemed OK before I took it out. Probably wait for my new shocks before I put it in properly.

My cable began 'ticking' after a change.
but if yours isnt hooked up, then it cant be that.

Timing gear should not have any load related noises, there are no different forces on it under power, it just provides valve timing.
Can be rev related.
Ticking can also come from a slight exhaust leak in the downpipe or manifold.

Mine ticks when accelerating since RR. It sounds cool and I'm planning on an engine change anyway in future so it does not worry me

maybe it's a ticking countdown to your engine change.

har. I do think its sexy when your engine sounds old but still roars. Something about being a man that sound appeals to. Or maybe I'm just weird.
I saw a Ford popular drift a few minutes ago, I was rather impressed.

I'll make do with it as it is then. By the time mine completes the big ticking count down, maybe I'll have worked out how to make a Toyota 3S GE 2l engine fit, after all I have a spare one lying around.
