Idle on new 340?

Post by alfaloz »

Hi there,

After a few years of Alfa ownership I have returned to a 340 (allbeit not for long, unless it convinces me) and have just picked one up. It's a 340 1.4 GL on a G plate. 30,000 miles from new with all the original documents. Once you rev it it is fine and if you hold slight throttle it is fine. But normal idling it is very lumpy and struggles to stay running at all. I was just wondering if this is a common/known fault? Any suggestions greatly appreciated :-)

Check this post out, it may or may not help but it's a very common problem on the 1.4's

Replace your carb gasket to be sure on air leaks. My 1.7 decides to run lumpy when it feels like it really. Have you tried a carb rebuild?

Cheers for all this guys. Sorry if I posted in the wrong bit, it's my first day :lol:

When I get home I will take the carb off and check properly for air leaks etc. First time I'll have done that in a long while :lol:

Also could be lumpy due to bad mixture but a carb rebuild will fix that too.

step on the brake repeatadly;

if idle responses to that (higher or lower) you'll need to readjust the co
if idle doesn't response, first check if the connecting piece on the intake manifold is still intakt if so adjust the idle screw to let it run ok.

then monitor your fuel consumption when driving normal to see if that is enough or you'll need to go for a carb rebuild.
