When does a car become a "Classic?"

Post by Justin »

Im just about to renew my insurance and Go-Compare led me to an extremely cheap classic car insurer called Lancaster. My car is nearly twenty two years old, it's an E reg manufactured in 1988.

Who said Volvos were crap eh?

If go compare shows it in a comparison, the company must be willing to insure you...

If it's something you just found off an article, ring them up, as different companies have different policies.

Is every old car classic even when it's age, spare parts availability and rarity would be on levels of classic car? I would think that there is need of something else to top those off?

When I try to see if there would be any nice 300 on sale, there are none, only some boyracer wrecked crap or rusted and used without service type of crap. Those like mine for example are no more on sale, so time to get into classic rarity seems to be quite near.

I was told by an insurance company that when it hits 20 it becomes a classic. (Adrian Flux I think)

According to the British government, only cars built prior to 1/1/1973 are classics.

What a load of nonsense ;-)

I insured my 360 with Lancaster on a classic policy through moneysupermarket or the like last year mate. Accepted the renewal this year too. Got it even cheaper after removing breakdown, legal, agreed valuation etc lol.

Do it.

Ach, come on. Be fair to the previous one. That all round nice bloke Ken Clarke was Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister) when the rolling 25 year concession was originally introduced (1993). And he drove a old second-hand Ford XR3. :D

And in the interest of balance, a pre '97 a 1.4 engined car used to pay £150 a year road tax (that's about £205 in todays money). Now it's only £125 and that is very cheap in real terms. (or around £90 in 1997 money) and that was under Gordon Brown.

I think the figures were something like 80,000 vehicles eligible when the tax concession was introduced, but when stopped over 320,000 vehicles were eligible. It was no longer a cheap give-away.

They will tax you somehow. Always have done, always will.

Anyway it's a rolling 30 years here (annual motor tax €48) with NCT (MOT) exemption. For insurers, I've usually had no problems when a car has reached 20 years old (Footman James) sm4

Well, what about our government in Finland then, my tax bill will be around 4k/year, what a lunatics them are

Maybe we get renewed classic car rules rolling by then, so I would have only classic cars by gov's standards

I think over here a car is eligible for classic status if it's over 25 years old*, I recently renewed my insurance ( A$242.09 fully-comp) and tried to get it on a classic policy, but was told that it would have to be on a limited milage scheme - since I do about 800kms a month, this wouldnt work....

*It helps if its got a ford or holden badge and has a whacking great engine, I get the feeling most aussie classic car fans wouldnt know a proper classic from the hole in their arse.....
