F7P questions

Post by Om7 »

Hi! I am interested in doing this swap but I cannot seem to find a guide on here. (yes, I have searched. :lol:)

I have quite a few questions, so;

1. Which gearbox do I need?
2. Can I use the standard prop and diff (1.4)?
3. I wish to run it on bike carbs. Can I control the spark with the Clio ECU or will I need standalone management?
4. Does the F7P just drop onto the standard engine mounts?
5. How I see it at the moment I am on the lookout for a F7P lump with Loom and ECU. Which ancillaries will I need?
6. Which rad do people use?

Basically I just wish to know what I need before I start pulling the old lump out. If someone could make up a quick list of parts that would be great.

I apologise if all of these questions have been asked before. If they have and I have missed them, please point me in the right direction.

Cheers!

Right,

No one's going to give you advice untill I see some pics of the car especially the e30 too! :lol:

You need fair amount of bits of a 1700. There's plenty of people who can help you on here, no doubt they'll help you out as soon as they see this

Now get me photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the one. :p I think she has been passed around a lot of guys in the past (tut) but I'm going to look after her. :lol: It's already in much better shape than when I bought it! Drive home was interesting with no brakes, indicators, starter, clutch etc. :roll:

I don't have many pics of the 340 yet. Mostly only sorted mechanical problems. Now the MOT has run out so it's coming off the road for the F7P swap whilst I drive the E30 again for a while. :)

EDIT 2

ok dude, here are some probably right answers.
someone will correct me if im wrong

Om7 wrote:Hi! I am interested in doing this swap but I cannot seem to find a guide on here. (yes, I have searched. :lol:)

I have quite a few questions, so;

1. Which gearbox do I need? Current is fine
2. Can I use the standard prop and diff (1.4)? Dif ands prop fine, youll need a 1.7 bellhousing.
3. I wish to run it on bike carbs. Can I control the spark with the Clio ECU or will I need standalone management? spice custom job (see Adam - 360GLT)
4. Does the F7P just drop onto the standard engine mounts? 1.7 engine mounts
5. How I see it at the moment I am on the lookout for a F7P lump with Loom and ECU. Which ancillaries will I need? 1.7 heater and rad pipes,1.7 Passenger side bellhousing mount bracket, 1.7 clutch (might as well change all the clutch), 1.7 sump, 1.7 clutch cable, 1.7 spigot bearing.
6. Which rad do people use? current is fine
Ideally -* electric fuel pump
* reversed inlet manifold if you want to keep the heater.

Cheers!
All from Filthyjohns earlier posts.
And hes done a good few of these swaps man.

Thank you! Only a couple more questions then;

I should probably upgrade to the 1.7 5 speed box as 1.4 4 speed ratios are bad enough with the 1.4! Would it be okay to keep the 1.4 diff with the 1.7 5 speed box? Is there any ratio difference between the 1.4 and 1.7 diffs?

I am quite surprised as to how little needs changing! I am guessing you mean I need to put a 1.7 340 clutch onto the F7P?

Cheers!

edit; I have just seen your edit. That's more like it. :P I was going to say, I hardly need anything! There is a 1.7 in the scrap yard at the moment (if it's still there) I'll make a list and see what I can recover from it. :D

I will be using a electric bike pump as they are cheap and easy. :)

Correct. You only NEED the middle plate. But do yourself a favour and change the lot while youre in there.
Ebay has 1.7 clutch kits cheap enough dude.

Ratios, i dont know. Someone will be along soon enough though (ding dong, paging Anjo, chris, adam, foggy etc)
Think Dif/box combos'll be right enough, but unsure. Again, wait on for a genius.

not tooo fast Ben!

current rad is useless, it's the old style B14 coolant system rad, with is allmost 1/2 smaller than the later mk3 radiator for b14/b200, the rad from any late model 300 (85>) is fine.

also, you'll have to fabricate custom radiator mounts for the larger rad, originally at your car, this is mounted inside the engine bay. the later mk3 style fitting on the frontbeam makes it easyer for engine acces, you'll need to hack away on the frontplate anyway since there is a piece of steel in the coolant-way of the needed wider radiator

@ om7, if there is a 1.7 in the scrapheap take the entire car! you can always bring back the rest of the car when you're done :lol:

volvosneverdie; New clutch was on the list anyway. No point throwing it in without one. Even though they are ridiculously easy to change on 340's you can't beat doing it whilst it's out!

volvodspec; That's fine. I guess as long as it's a little bigger any rad would do? :) About the car in scrappy; No way to transport it and no space! :(! I have five cars at my house and five and a bike in my unit. :lol: Fortunately only the 340 and E30 are mine. :P.

So, (correct me if I am wrong) I have a really short ratio diff ('81 with 4 speed box) which cannot be coupled to a 5 speed? If I get any diff off a 5 speed it will be okay?

:lol: you do need a lot of parts from the 1.7 as ben listed, while you're at it undo 12 + 4 bolts extra and take the gearbox incl halfshafts along too. a spare prop will come in handy anyway with any engine upgrade and even the halfshafts can be broken in half.

i do love your wheels btw! :D

So here is my current shopping list;

F7P
F7P loom and ECU
F7P starter
F7P alternator
1.7 engine mounts
1.7 gearbox
1.7 diff
1.7 bellhousing
1.7 heater and rad pipes
1.7 passenger side bellhousing mount
1.7 clutch
1.7 sump
1.7 clutch cable
1.7 spigot bearing
later type rad
bike carbs
bike fuel pump
adapted inlet manifold for carbs
Clio exhaust manifold and downpipe

Let me know if I have missed anything or have anything wrong. I am still unsure about ignition for the carbs though if anyone can clear that up? Spice custom job means nothing to me. :roll:

I would rather not spend money if I can get away with it. A mate of mine has a MK2 Golf with a 2.0 Audi lump on bike carbs with his standard ECU (which isn't a real ECU, just a spark controller) and that made 179bhp. A guy he knows has exactly the same setup but with Megajolt which made 180bhp. Not really worth the extra £150. :P
