Considering it's a 1.7 with a Solex carb (28-34 CISAC) I'd be surprised if the float still floats at all, considering it is 2 p's worth of plastic tat (costs a lot more though). Remove the air filter housing, remove the carb's float cover (the 'top half'), and pull out the little pin that keeps the float assembly in place. Take it out, get a plastic bowl of some sort, fill it with water and hinge the float on the edge to see if it still floats. It should only touch the water and not submerge in any way. If it does however, get a new one.

i have spent the last day or so playing around with the floats in my solex. the book says between 33 and 37mm. when i took mine apart it was at 37, so i put it to 33. made no difference, took it back apart, took it below 33mm, i found that the car started, but when fuel build up, the car died, in the same way it did on roundabouts, looked in the carb, and fuel was pissing out because the fuel was to high, took a guess that this was the same that was happening when cornering, the floats are now at 38mm and the car is lovely. lol
