fuel pumps good as are the filters! ive recently done a full service on it including changing them! and it will only run if the flap in top of the carb is fully shut if you move it just the smallest amount it cuts out!!!
i am planning on a 16v conversion very soon but i still need my car until ive got the last few bits to do the conversion so i need to get it running

You havn't mentioned the dizzy mate, when was that last done?
Things it sounds like to me are dizzy or an air leak. Both of which are likely, but easy and cheap to fix. Grab the top of the air filter box and try wobbling it for a start, there should be none.

This bit gives me the standard worry... which bit do you call the coil? If you've changed the renix unit, make sure you have changed to another with the same number. Mechanics love to change them for another that looks the same from a renault or similar but they have the ignition map stored on them so it's important to have the right one.

Cool, ok. It sounds like either a setup thing or an airleak as it's still running but badly, so whilst this might be teaching granny to suck eggs....
The 2 things I'd check first are that the choke cable is set right (make sure the flap has full range of movement when the knob is moved) and it's worth carefully spraying some easy start/WD40 around the inlet side. If the revs pick up you have a leak.
Was the renix you fitted the correct number for your car? Should be a 415 for a late 1.7, the earlier ones (410) have a bit more advance and require super really.

Anything inlet related, so inlet manifold, carb base, air filter base etc. Just mind the exhaust manifold
Actually, just had another thought. Do you still have the warm air flap going to the air filter housing? From the air filter there should be a t piece, and a piece of spaceman tubing to a shield on the exhaust manifold as well as a piece of flexible plastic tube to the front panel next to the rad.

well that space man pipe wasnt their as when i brought the car it didnt have a air filter box dont ask me why he removed it! so ive found one but its missing the flap so ive manufactured one so it gets warm air to it!
