Hey guys, well had a bit of an exciting day with Vince today :S Set out for work this morning and just as I was filtering from the sliproad onto the M6 the car cut out on me! F*ck! Not the time nor place to have the car cut out on ya! Managed to start it back up although it wouldn't idle managed to move it over to the side anyway, got out and popped the bonnet with nothing obvious started it back up again and it seemed to run and idle fine on choke tempted luck and ran it off choke halfway along the journey and it seemed fine again although start playing up a little again just as I managed to pull into work!

Finished work and time for the journey home! Drove it as normal and halfway back along the M6 I had the same problem again, got it running on choke and just got myself back home

So I get home and start poking about I can't believe how filthy this carb is and how considering it's location it managed to get so dirty! Cleaned it down a bit with carb cleaner anyway while I was on the hunt for air leaks located the idle solenoid and thought i'd whip it out and clean it up, went to undo it with the spanner and it was loose! Didn't need to even crack it off.......

Anyway takes that out and I gave it a good cleanup aswell as the electrical connector for it and refit it, I carried on poking around and thought i'd give my jets a blast of air to make sure they're blowing clear and WTF they wiggled about!!!!



I got a screwdriver down there and tried to tighten up but couldn't manage to do it. Can they be tightened with the carb intact and I they are just being awkward for me, or does it need to be taken apart?

Either way, I gave the car a try and it doesn't seem to be cutting out now so hopefully tightening and cleaning that solenoid should have cured it but obviously I do need to sort these jets out too! Any advice/tips would be very handy thanks guys!

P.S for reference it's a late B14 with a Weber 32 DIR (104-100 / 105-100 so Haynes manual reckons)

you can tighten them from above but can't get them loose. turn them clockwise mate

those are the main air jets, below them the emulsion pipes. for correct fuel transfer to the venturi's it is essential these are tight

also, if you touch the throttle you see a beam of fuel going into the 1st barrel, if you see any petrol leaking into the 2nd barrel it is worth it to take the floaterchamber cover off and tightening this; the acceleration jet

I know yer i'm not wanting to loosen them anymore lol! It must just be the case then that they're being awkward buggers locating onto the thread properly to tighten them up. I'll have a good go at it tomorrow then probably at dinner time at work or something!

I really need to learn how to strip these things down and rebuild them! Going to try and sort out all new breather/vacuum hosing from work tomorrow if possible and sort all those out!

keep an eye on the restrictor valve in the hose running from T-piece on valve cover around the carb and connected to the carb foot, is you don't place that back you'll have a big vacuum leak


dismanteling the floaterchamber is easy, throw airfilterhousing away (not literally), on the valve cover side of the carb there is a clip holding a rod coming from the choke valve axle, take a screwdriver and unclip it. on the other side of the carb there is a similar rod but this time you need to compress a spring and slide the rod out. then unscrew the 5 bolts holding the floaterchamber and that's it

if you can't make any sense of the bit i write before unscrewing the 5bolts (wich i would totally understand, pics are way better to explain this but i don't have those near) you can just start with unscrewing the 5 bolts, if you then pull the floaterchamber up you see where it gets stuck so you'll know what to take loose

Hey guys well a bit of an update, the car drove to work today fine without problems, didn't have much traffic along the way too which I think is the reason why I didn't have any problems! the cars definately starting easier since I've cleaned up that solenoid anyway!

Anyway, on the way back home I hit a big amount of traffic meaning I was having to creep alot and low and behold the car cuts out on me and does exactly the same as before!

So I think ive found a pattern here! It seems to happen when i'm in traffic when the engines getting warmer than usual and when i'm on an off the clutch creeping at low speeds. I've managed to get the car back now and i've let it sit on the drive and warm up at a complete standstill to see if the car will stall and nothing! It only seems to be with creeping. Does anybody have any ideas?? I'm going back outside to play in a minute, amongst having a go at tightening the jets into place (they don't seemed to have move mind which is good) I'll have a look around

Any help would be appreciated guys ta'!

let it run idle with normal warm engine; no choke.

press repeadatly on the brake; does idle rpm change?

yer the idle drops a little when the brakes are pressed firmly. I'm sure my last one did it too, should that happen?

nope, shouldn't happen.

idle has to stay constant when repeatadly applying the brakes; you've got it running too rich, best thing to do is get it to a garage and see how much CO it produces
