I think it's always had this but now I have a few new parts I'm giving it the beans more often -

When going from say 10% throttle upto 80-90% the power comes in lumps, you can feel the whole transmission squeeze the bushes in surges-lurching the power on... eurgghh
Throttle operates smoothly, pedal and cable fine - new air filter (good one). everything in ignition properly clean and gapped.
leads good everything good, carburettor... fuel pump/pressure?? air leak?

1.7? Mine did this just before I pulled the engine out, so I never did work out what it was. It was either due to the carb or really bad compression. More likely carb.

I was thinking compression but it wouidn't be so pronounced has to be surging fuel pressure... its like It were on tow with an elastic band - plus this engine is more likely to need bearing before piston

classic situation for a loose acceleration jet.

what happens is that the thing should only squirt in the first barrel along with the throttle; when the jets vibrates itself loose it also starts to fill up the second barrel, sometimes allmost to the top! then, the moment you hit the throttle a bit deeper all that fuel lying on the 2nd butterfly valve is poored into the intake manifold creating a waaaay to rich mixture for a moment.

take the airfilter cover off and prefered the entire airfilterhousing. keep the engine off, apply throttle and look at the center of the 2nd barrel to see if any fuel poors down into it; it probably won't squirt so well in the 1st barrel too.

getting to it requires taking the floaterchamber off the carb; if the floaterchambergasket is a bit wasted i suggest you simply refurb the carb and check the float level while you're at it.

You know what, I think it's this shite petrol - put some premium in and voilà.

Down to needing one strut bearing, 2 new inserts, front wheelbearings. just ran out of cash for the mo'.
just wheel bearings and "naff all" (£60) welding for mot - keeping it alive...

Volvodspec thinks along the same lines as me. Accel pump not pumping enough petrol into the venturi so you're getting a lean surge as you punch the throttle.

It could well be a loose accel pump jet, or it could equally be the accel pump diaphragm itself being worn. If there's a rebuilt kit around, then probably worth taking the time to rebuild the carb. Its not a bad job if you take your time, just get some carb cleaner spray and after you take the carb off the car clean all the carp off the outside of it before you start dismantling it so you don't get any dirt inside it.

I'll get the kit, as soon as it gives me the impression it needs doing I'll do it- but it's still perfectly drivable and not bothering economy, it can wait a while.

i may be experiencing something similar to this. not that i've driven the car or anything... gonna go and check under the hood tomorrow for this
