I'm looking software for copy stuff

Post by jtbo »

Anyone know such software that would let me use windows explorer to copy files, but instead of using standard windows copy routines it would use dos prompts xcopy?

I would like to drag and drop bunch of files while keeping some key down for copy and move or perhaps to compress and I would like that it does bring up dialog for compress options, for compressing it should use dos version of winrar or similar. So I would not need to input paths or anything like that. Also errors while copying cause win xp copy to halt without any idea what files have been processed and which not so I really need some alternative for that.

It seems to be that windows explorer in XP and Vista are bit of jokes, try to manipulate 25 000 files at once or more and it becomes impossible. Even winrar bodges down if I somehow can get context menu to show up before icon refresh which makes menu to disappear.

Maybe it would be possible to code in C# too, but I'm not really that good in coding.

Anyone has ideas about these kind of programs? Quite difficult to find anything like such when I don't have any idea about program names, only I know what it should do.

For more robust file copying, some friends recommended TeraCopy and it seems to work fine for me too. http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php No help on compression though.

Teracopy seems to solve most of issues, excellent piece of code, thx from tip, specially nice is that it asks if file is overwritten but don't stop work, it does continue with other files and when you choose action to that particular file it processes it in queue. It makes windows default file handling look so stone age

Moving photos to storage drive has been real pain, but with this software I managed to do it in minutes. Hmm, I sound like some bad tv-shop commercial now

It would only need option for compressing and so it would be perfect software that should be standard in Windows :P

I think software is helping me for that 15 euros price tag in a long run.

Edit: oh, found out that there is 50% sale for that in tuesday 23rd at http://www.bitsdujour.com/software/teracopy/ and that is US$ which should favour our strong currency, in theory. By Google, it should be around 6.8 euros, so no excuse to be not buying pro version.
