Starter motor - run on?

Post by Vario Si »

Recently when starting the car, it sounds as if the starter motor runs on a little after I release the key, making a nice noise... only for a second or two?

Anyone had this kind of issue?

Cheers

Right, I've experienced this with a car that stood for a little while. It's normally nothing to worry about. Is it like a bit of a crunching sound as though it's not disengaging? It's normally due to a bush being dry so sticks a little as it's trying to return to it's original position. It might with more use go away. Did the car stand for a while before you owned it?

Mine does that sometimes. If the key remains in the 'start' position for about a second after the engine is started it makes a dying whirring noise, kind of like the sound when you turn a vacuum cleaner off. The noise it makes if you keep the key turned for too long is a different story altogether, though. Ouch!

yup sounds like the gear is sticking in starter or the solenoid is sticking !
if the starter is still trying to turn even though the engine has fired(and youve let go of the key  ) its the solenoid or the key barrel sticking. vice versa if its not trying to turn starter its just the gear not springing back frome the ring gear.

It had not been used for a few months about 6months or more ago... I now only use it say once a week on a short journey and every week or two I probably do around 150 odd miles (I don't know as not sorted out the clock yet! - will do that when get Rev Counter later this week :D).

Do you think the run on could cause any damage, or not really anything to worry about?

If it's worthwhile doing how easy would it be to check/sort out the bush if it is dry, or if it's the solenoid what could I do?

And no Aymat I don't start it in park! The car was off when I took those photos :p

Cheers

If it's a crunching noise then it will wear out the teeth on the starter motor and it will eventually wear out the starter itself. In very rare circumstances it can also damage the teeth on the flywheel, but that is rare because the flywheel is stronger, but it is possible.

Although probably not related at all, mine will often make a honking-type noise just after the engine picks up and I let go of the key. It's done it for years and nobody's managed to explain what it is, on the other hand, the car still works so it can't be that bad :)

Yeah mine does that too. The engine turns over, then fires, amd you get a errrrrg noise for a second before it stops

this is a known issue with B14 starters.

it's a slow killer for both starter AND toothed ring on the flywheel.

cleaning the starter motor's moving parts helps.
mounting a older type of starter (for B110 or B130) also solves the problem. a B14 starter is lighter, stronger, but alas.. also flimsier.
