Starter motor - run on?
Starter motor - run on?
Recently when starting the car, it sounds as if the starter motor runs on a little after I release the key, making a nice noise... only for a second or two?
Anyone had this kind of issue?
Cheers

Right, I've experienced this with a car that stood for a little while. It's normally nothing to worry about. Is it like a bit of a crunching sound as though it's not disengaging? It's normally due to a bush being dry so sticks a little as it's trying to return to it's original position. It might with more use go away. Did the car stand for a while before you owned it?

Mine does that sometimes. If the key remains in the 'start' position for about a second after the engine is started it makes a dying whirring noise, kind of like the sound when you turn a vacuum cleaner off. The noise it makes if you keep the key turned for too long is a different story altogether, though. Ouch!

yup sounds like the gear is sticking in starter or the solenoid is sticking !
if the starter is still trying to turn even though the engine has fired(and youve let go of the key
) its the solenoid or the key barrel sticking. vice versa if its not trying to turn starter its just the gear not springing back frome the ring gear.

It had not been used for a few months about 6months or more ago... I now only use it say once a week on a short journey and every week or two I probably do around 150 odd miles (I don't know as not sorted out the clock yet! - will do that when get Rev Counter later this week
).
Do you think the run on could cause any damage, or not really anything to worry about?
If it's worthwhile doing how easy would it be to check/sort out the bush if it is dry, or if it's the solenoid what could I do?
And no Aymat I don't start it in park! The car was off when I took those photos :p
