Making a NB A/F ratio meter ;)

Post by Fuse »

Heh, I started building a narrow band lambda gauge. I know it doesn't show much info etc... but with my current setup accurate info wouldn't be too much use as there isn't much to adjust.. ;D I just wanna see when the extra ecu comes on and will it be rich mixture or lean. For that the NB lambda will fit fine, I'll buy wideband when I get proper engine managment. :P

Also I had an empty space for one 52mm gauge and nice knight rider-style leds are cool so that was the main reason..

It is funny that they want something like from 50 to 90 euros for NB lambda gauges. even though that the price of electrical parts is nowhere near that. Pretty much same simple circuit in every commercial application too so I though that I don't want to pay extra for nothing.

http://ffp-motorsport.com/tuning/20ledseos.php I'll be using that circuit.

Ok what about appearance, how will it look nice in 52mm place. Well that's not a problem. We'll just need a cheapo amp-meter (cost 4.25 euros) from Biltema which will be giving it's shell in better use. (Biltema is a Scandinavian warehouse which sells cheap (sometimes it shows.. ;D) stuff, a bit like Home Depot in USA. ;))

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_1305.JPG

Then it's time to find some sophisticated tools like these

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_1312.JPG
http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_1309.JPG

After some sawing with the dull blade this is the result:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_1316.JPG

Now I'll just have to make the circuit. I'll be using rectangle shaped leds for that 80's look.. ;)

Gauge will be going in this http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... kiinni.jpg

Fuse, those leds, I think I had them on my gauge and they really are not enough bright on daylight.

I have leds that have two leds in one case, those are same diameter, think two of leds you showed glued together.
These leds that I have do have white face and casing, colors are green and red. Eh, I give you pics.

http://www.janiervast.com/gallery/v/alb ... ?g2_page=4

So you can see that there is few leds that looks same as those you posted and then those that I changed to replace those, these new are much brighter and specially that white base color makes it easy to spot when led is lit.

It was hopeless with those originals as even when day was cloudy those were hard to spot if they were lit or not.

I'm planning to do one of those myself too to protoboard as my current one is not standard, scale starts from 14.4 and goes to 8.0 or so, can't remember very well. I would need to change resistors to this but I have no idea to what value and I have no adjustable powersource so would be hard to calibrate. I think I'm going to use chip from this gauge so that limits bit of my options naturally.
But I will look first what three resistors I should change and what value, just need to understand bit of how these work..

Oh yes, there is only few needle versions of lambda meter, but I think that could be easy to do as basicly what you need is volt meter that knows 0-1V range, then something to make voltage changes slow, maybe capacitor? Also I think if you would do that in Volvo gauge style it might be quite nice :P

Ok thanks! Good to know about those leds. I won't be getting those then if those are not bright enough. :P

When I look again they may not be precisely same model, but still, I recommend to look some bit brighter models as normal led is too weak in daylight, those leds were indeed ok in roomligh but not outside anymore.

Maybe not superbright but somewhat bright leds. Also them don't need to be so bright if they are for example white when not lit as colorchange is easier spotted. Too bright leds are annoying at night. Lol, simple thing and already getting difficult :)

Haha. Well I'll test them at the shop if possible. :P Luckily both Bebek and Yleiselektroniikka are not far away so the range of different leds should be good.

It's easy enough to put a little LDR onto the output drive circuit, so it senses ambient light and brightens/dims the LED's according. I'm sure it'll be covered out the in web land, else post a shout up and I'll show you how to do it! Good effort on the gauge Fuse, I reckon it'll look cool in a 52mm housing

Yeah, nice idea Chris, or you could just put in a switch for night/wire them up to the dash lights, so they dim when the dash lights come on, jut use a relay.

If the LED's are in the shade somehow, such as being recessesd they may be more visable in the day

I too am looking forward to seeingn this Fuse!;)

I'm feeling lame, as I'm busy programming wideband AFR features into my 400 info centre, but I want flashing lights too...

hmmmmmm, a plan is forming....
