filler cap
filler cap
new car has a filler cap that isn't attatched to anything, so when i want to fill up i have to put it on my roof. this doesnt seem right, i guess the plastic must have snapped - does anyone know where the plastic should run to/from?

Filler cap
My previous car(s) 1986 360 injection & 1988 360 GL Injection did have a small plastic strap to hold filler cap. On my current car 1988 360 GLT it not available although the small holes for the strap are available. Perhaps on the scrapyard you can find a good fillercap. At least on the Dutch models it is supposed to be available.
With kind regards,

All of mine that I'm aware have the plastic strap, it was I would've imagined a standard item.
However for some time I've been very concerned at the smell of fuel when the tank is quite full. I never actually brim the tank so to speak and fill it right to the top with every drop of fuel that will fit in, but if it is pretty full, after a while and a few corners you could smell fuel when you stopped, outside the car! Then today I saw a dribble line of fuel down the side of the car, under the filler cap from when I filled up yesterday. I know that I never spilt fuel there, and as the car is very dirty it showed up the fuel today (there are advantages to dirty cars!). I took the cap off to realise that the fuel is coming up the kneck on cornering etc and is actually escaping between the seal of the cap and then either coming out onto the body under the cap, or through the small hole beneath the kneck, which I would imagine is for small amounts of spilt fuel to escape. The actual seal on the cap is fine, however the plastic strap appears to be too long and twisted oddly, so that it is not sitting within the kneck, but being kinked and shut inbetween the seal, keeping it away from the filler kneck, causing the leak! One worry off my mind, especially as it was fuel!
So now I just have to make sure the strap is tucked right back in the filler pipe as the cap is put on! Or cut it off!
Anyway, just a thought for anyone else should they start to smell fuel and panic! Check this first, as I think it was never enough to get onto the bodywork in any great amount before, and being a dry day I noticed it, and before it's probably been draining away through the spillage hole, but I've been able to smell it!

I kep smelling ful on mine too. But as Steve said the strap is missing so it wasnt that. Eventually, after getting tired of smelling it got under the car and tracked it down to where the filler pipe joins the takes (was a bit of a guess TBH). Covered it in sealant and never smelt petrol again

I have had petrol smells and drips beneath the car due to a knackered overflow pipe. Its a little rubber pipe hidden behind the boot trim that takes fuel that has overflowed into the filler neck back down to the tank. A fresh bit of rubber heater hose and new jubilee clips sorted it.
