Ambient Temperature Help (now with m0ar need for help!)

Post by filthyjohn »

Areet folks,
Been recommisioning the vario, and adding the 6 gauge dash unit. I've come unstuck trying to wire in the temp gauge. Here's the blue leaflet picture:

The cable ends are different though:

I can pull a couple of connectors from a spare multiplug:
Image

Looking at panel 11, I'm missing a length of cable, so it'll be bodgery then.
It says to fit them to slots 6 and 12, but they're occupied already:

What shall I do, splice them in or what?
Cheers.

Which bit you having issues with mate? Under the dash (normally taped up) will be an earth and a black/white stripey (I think thats what you are showing in your "ends are different piccy) Just male spade into them (they are female spades) straight to the sender

This is a job I've been meaning to do for years... Some cars have the wiring already in place (mine doesn't). If those slots are already full then it suggests yours does. Root around the front of your car for spare ends near your offside headlamp.

All the 340s I've done Ronnie (all post 88) have had the wiring up to the steering column (i.e. it's in the dashboard connectors, but ends in 2 female spades taped up under the dash) It's only GLT's I've seen the wire run all the way to the front on.

Yeah the GLT's usually have the wires somewhere near the front or under the airbox somewhere tied up

Aha, Cheers for that, I'll have a rummage around for them then. I've already fitted the sender behind the bumper and run the wires into the cabin, so I'll have a darn good search tomorrow and report back.

In other news, how do I plumb in the econometer? I know it needs manifold vacuum, but there's nowhere to put it on a 1.4
Plus, this being a vario there are vacuum pipes aplenty but if I tap into one of those won't I bollox up the delicate vacuum ecosystem?

Nah,the meter doesn't actually "use" any of the vacuum, just measures it - whack in a t-piece wherever you can.

1.4 you want to put a t piece on the hose that goes between carb base and the T piece on the rocker cover, make sure you cut the hose carb side of the restrictor (I think... Foggy and Grandad told me the wrong side when I did it...) Erm, yeah, it must be carb side, you want inlet mani vacuum.. carb side ;)

It's 12 centigrade in the unit! Both the connectors were female, so I had to cut wires and crimp on some spades. It was almost as if I knew what I was doing! :D

Cheers, just need to find out why it's not starting now. Every electric item on the car works perfectly, even the seat heaters, but there's not even a solenoid click when you try to start it. Gonna check my wiring, but maybe the starter's got bored and killed itself after nearly a year of inactivity.

IT LIVES!

Turns out it had an immobiliser circuit leftover from a bodged alarm. Removed the extra rubbish, plugged the ignition live straight into the starter and it cranked. Took about 20 seconds to pull the fuel through, but barked up nicely. It even moves about under its own steam :D :D :D

Ign live:

Had this in it:

Which led to all this rubbish:
