Ooops! That's not nice... not seen it that bad before either but I guess if that's the worst place its rusting it could be worth, jacking points and sills are more of a git to repair! Maybe it's worth getting hold of a 'cut out' from a good donor car to give to them to repair it with?

I won't be able to get a cut out by Saturday though, so might go with whatever they do for now, and then try and get a cut out and get it done by 'my man' at my local garage as and when money allows!!!

It is a weird place... but there is also rusty holes on the bottom of the hatch door itself... though I'll cut that outmyself and pack it with rustproofer, sealing paint and filler!

I know magnumpi has been searching for the same part, might be worth pming him to see if he's turned a rear panel up?
I know he has the part number anyway, which I'm sure would be of use to you.

I've been working away for a few again so only just seen this thread.

Sadly i've not been able to get hold of a rear panel myself yet which is annoying because i want it fixed, it's just an open hole behing the number plate, so the back window is permanently misted up, although i think water is getting in somewhere else as there is what looks to be a tiny cress plant growing in the passenger footwell carpet . At this rate i'm thinking i'll just get some sheet metal and try and fab something up, can't be that hard........ can it

Rusty volvo update... I decided not to take the car to the garage as realised he'd probably do a crap job and make more work in the end... so how much do you think it would cost to get the nearside back panel cut out and a new piece fabricated and welded in?

I have been given one quote, but wanted to compare that with what you all think?

This professional body repair man would cut out the old, fabricate a new piece and weld it in and then make it 'as new'... I have seen his work, it is A1.

What do you reckon to the cost then??

Amount of time spent getting it right... directly proportional to how good it looks.

For yours, if it's less than 200 (3 hours labour at a guess) the chap either has a thing for you, or isn't doing a good job. Or, he is a significantly fast bodywork ninja, but I'm guessing thats unlikely!

its my all time Uke-fave.
I think under £400 for custom fabrication and welding a back panel is is doing very well.
Under £300 is a bargain.

Just my opinion though.
And judged against what garages charge for shoddy patch weldz.

What do people think of this cheaper option:

I thought I'd cut out ALL the rust myself using small tools, vactan the steel that's left, then encapsulate it with something like KBS rust seal, then JB Weld aluminium mesh all the way round the wholes and outwards to form a proper boot seal lip, then fibergalss it all and skim it with aluminium based filler then sand it all down and respray...

Do you think that would work?

Much cheaper at 35 quid for materials and my own time!!! It's not round an mot spot... plus if I encapsulate the metal at least that element can;'t get any worse..

Not meant to be offensive in any way, but I would not recommend paper-machéing your way out of a rusty bit that you'll most likely need when someone not paying attention makes his way through the boot while you were at a standstill.

New metal or go home.
Chicken wire and filler is from the sixties, and is not to be recomened.
It'll rot out around the affected area quicker than you can address the encroachment I recon.
Do it once and do it right.
£350 might sound like a lot. But it's good money for what you're getting.
