Help - Indicator stalk problem

Hi all

We are on our 2nd 340 now, and for the second time the indicator stalk has somehow sheared off from inside the dash where it is housed. Has anyone else had this problem with a 300 series car? The plastic where it is supposed to be bolted to has broken and she really isn't driveable at the moment as the horn also keeps coming on with any sight vibration and is embarrassing! I am gutted that this has happened again; any suggestions are gratefully received, because as it stands at the moment, she has MOT until November this year, and will no way pass any MOT with this problem.

Thanks for reading.

haha I think a few people are rough with the indicators, they break if you try to snap them! Only real fix is a total replacement. As for the horn... interesting. Likely to be a short somewhere. I'd be willing to help if you're driving over the Poole direction. Anything to keep a 300 on the road.

I agree, get a new indicator collar/housing. Make sure the plastic fitting on the underside is tight and screwed in. I have "araldited" the plastic before which sometimes holds, but sheering would mean that theres probably some damage over a period of time. As pointed out, the horn, has got a short. Check the wires near the horn(s) itself. Moisture tend to get into there easily, otherwise find a dodgy MOT place!

From what I remember the broken part of the indicator shorts out the horn pick up ring thing. There is a very flimsy plastic strip between the indicator/wiper stalks which breaks and it all goes pear shaped. Can't quite remember how it all goes but I'm sure the two problems are connected.

Yes, quite a common problem, use fingers for the stalks not hands!

Repair depends on the what the damage is, the left hand bottom screw hole (for the switch module) in the plastic collar is narrower then the right hand side and usually is the first thing to go. It can be repaired solidly with a piece of metal with 2 holes for the screws, preferably with the all the bits of plastic still there.

Here's one I repaired earlier!

Hi, and thank you to all of you who have posted a reply. It has now been "bodged" with one half of a door hinge, which is holding it quite strong, at the moment.....Speedy, thanks for you offer, it has now been temporarily sorted but if the offer is open to meet up, then let us know...maybe coming to Poole in the next week or two...Thanks again all.
