300 series roll cage - time to move forward

Post by mrsoundcraft »

Would you look at the time. I should be asleep!

Anyway the next step for my car has to be a roll cage. I feel like the car's in limbo at the moment, Im loosing focus on what I set out to do, while the car just sits in the shed.
I know there's a lot of experience on this forum so I want to know what the best way is of putting a cage together for around £2-300.

Ive been looking at cages for other cars on ebay that could be cut and re-shaped to fit the 340, but maybe it would be better to start from scratch. My shed mate has a very good mig welder so thats the main obstacle out of the way! :D

Does anyone with a cage want to share their dimensions just to make doing this a bit easyer?
I would like to be able to make a roll cage design avaliable to anyone on the forum so that it becomes much easyer to cage up a 300. You never know if it goes to plan I might even be able to make them to order.

Can you not still just buy one from Safety Devices? They did at some point sell them for 300's

The Safety devices cage comes in at over £400, Im trying to do this for less. My car's never going to get an MSA logbook and never going to be used profesionally. Its got to be cheap.

Best appreciated when open.
I probably should have specified ladies legs in there too. [+=] "embarrarrased emoticon"[].com

Dear Sir's,

Please would you mind sending me the dimensions you carefully spend time working out, so that I could copy your cage not doing any of the hard work myself and not giving you any money.

Lots of Love

Theo.

Seriously dude, how big a market do you reckon the 300 motorsport scene is?! Companies need turnover to keep supplying us, they arn't in it for the giggles.

^  So true Chris!

Bending the CDS is the hard part. You need a tube bender, NOT a pipe bender. Unfortunately, these are very expensive!
There's a place near me that supplies CDS in many sizes and said they would bend it too, which is nice. The problem is, that it's trial and error and it needs to be done in situ IMO. Plus if (when) I make one I would personally want it as tight as possible, not a dash dodger! So even if SD somehow gave the dimensions (lol) they would be of no use to me.

If you want to do it cheap cheap cheap, then use box section. It looks shite, but still does the job, and you don't have to bend it/it will bend much easier.

The SD cage involves the vents being hacked out.

Custom cage is far better.Plus SD is now Polish owned so it motorsports' heritage is now replaced by harsh economics so they ain't going to divulge any info.

A little gem of knowledge.!!

MK 2 Escort rear loop+Mk 1 Front sections with a little bit of extention to the front legs=340/360 6 point cage.

That really is a little gem. Or gems as it may be. Thanks.

I'm considering a rear cage in the future, but I keep on noticing the Volvo literature saying that the 340 already has a "cage" as it where. After all, it isn't some dodgy french design now it it
