I love Hella grills!

Post by Chris_C »

First time for too long today I got to go and have a play with Fake, she's now running a hella grill (the one that was ment for Beast, before I decided not to keep her)

Other than that, I've got all the electric running again again, apart from heated seats and one central locking motor (I have a spare here, but it's getting dark). Most of the electrical problems are what I expected, Fake's been sat on my driveway for 3+ years now, doing nothing (I did 25 miles between buying it 3 years ago, and a fornight ago!) All the switches had oxidised, meaning no indicators, no blower fan, no lights. Then as I had removed all the rear cluster lamp holders, the earths were all shot on those too.

Most of this I fixed a fortnight ago when I got it MOT'd, but I havn't mentioned what was needed to pass it at all, so here we go. Remember, this is for a car thats sat for 3 years doing nothing, and when I got it, had the standard 1.7 non-idling problem, even though it had a replacement weber. This got cured accidentally 6 months ago, when it hadn't started for 18months, and wouldn't start, I thought the carb was playing up, turned out to be a perished fuel line, but having taken the carb apart and cleaned it, solved all the problems!

*New fuel line to fuel pump - Old ones perished
*Carb taken apart, cleaned, put back together
*Interior put back in (as I was storing most of Beast in it, had to find the interior first, spread between loft, garage and shed)
*Rear shocks replaced for Monroes (as I had a set in the loft, and this is a money limitation exercise!)
*Useful electrics fixed (i.e. anything that would fail an MOT)
*New back box
*Good clean to remove all cobwebs, mold, green stuff (yeah, nice)
*Rear brakes un siezed

What I couldn't do
*Needed a tad of welding under the drivers seatbelt area, not the sill though, but I made sure the guy cut out the old bit, and welded in a new bit. Damn good job, and the garage even put up with me standing around, moaning about how they do there job, and did it so I could catch a ferry that afternoon! Thats why I take my cars to them only!

So, since then,
*Got the blower fan working (bodged a resister pack and made the oxidised switch work again)
*Put a stereo in (although it's a tape thingy, it's better than nothing)
*Fitted Hella grill, as I'd forgotton how much I must use them, and was fed up of only seeing about 100 yds in front of me

Still to fix
*Timing Belt - don't know when it was done, but I've never done it
*Thermostat - it's not heating up unless its stuck in traffic
*Heated seats - As I'm not going kitesurfing till they are working, and I want to go kiting
*Central Locking - As I miss it
*Lots more I forget about, until I walk past it and see it again, but never write it down
*Erm, considering I ment to keep it standard, I have a gear shift light and an amb temp gauge sat here, and maybe remote central locking, oh, I just found a set of Volvo rear speakers and a Volvo amp on my shelf, and I'm fed up with manual windows too, so need to nick some mechs, and electric mirrors, as there are some on the island and in my local scrappy, and maybe a GLT splitter... and .. and... bugger

I've got it's orig set of Volvo trims at home, but was rushed, so just nicked the ones off Kar. And alloys are a maybe at end of month, depending if I can afford to re shod two of them...

Right, a bit later, and I have now sorted out the timing belt (yup, erm ok, maybe not just me... can't even get away with claiming that as half of you watched me and Andy.. well ok, more Andy, do it at the meet), thermostat, starter motor (as that decided to go) and Dai was right, 400 ones are 10x better..., and now it's decided to give dodgy spark, so new dizzy cap/arm, plugs and leads tomorrow.

Then... I can get round to sorting out the important things... like heated seats, and locking, and stereo.

All in all, whilst I didn't expect to be able to drive it from where it hadn't moved for three years with no problems, even with me doing most of the work, I've replaced practically everything bolted onto the engine now shy alternator, and I reckon its cost about £300 more than I expected. Still, nearly new 400 starter for £15 wasn't bad. It's still £300 that has come out of the "turbo Kar" fund though

Things consistantly going wrong are a PITA, aren't they? They really start to get you down and drain the enthusiasm after a while. That's why the 360 hasn't moved for about 3 weeks...even though it's a much tighter car than Nessy in most (for not all) ways. sm56

cheers

Yeah, it is starting to get on my t*ts, although as I said, I've now done nearly everything engine wise, so touch wood, things will slow down.
