Electricity problems - Engine dies

Post by NasoNex »

Hi.

I've got some problems with my car.

While running, independent of speed or how much trottle i have,
suddenly the "rev counter" goes to zero. And the engine goes dead.
No trottle response. And then suddenly the "rev counter" gets into function
again. And the engine runs fine. It often shoots just when it gets the spark again.

I have changed the sparkplugs, the spark plug cables - including the one between the coil and the distributor.

I believe that maybe the coil is damaged.. Since it seems like a electrical fault. And the coil has never been changed on the 263000 km the car has been running.

Any other solutions to my problem? And do you guys agree that it may be the coil?

My english is really bad, excuse me...

Thanks.

If the rev counter is dropping to 0 then it means the coil isn't being triggered properly. Check and clean the connections to the Renix ignition unit. Physically remove both of them clean them with alcohol and replace firmly.

If it still happens after that I would suspect its the flywheel sensor.

Oh one other thing. just check and clean the ignition switch, they can go bad too, jiggle the keys whilst the car is running.

Have checked the coil with an ohmmeter. and it seems fine. Both the primary and the secondary windings. have also checked the sensor. Ill borrow a more accuracy instrument from work tomorrow and check it again. As the primary winding resistance should be 0.6 +/- 0.2 Ohm.

And i dont think my instrument handles that small values.

I'll come back with more info tomorrow.

Give me hints if anyone can think of other things that could be wrong.

Good night.

Haha, think i found the fault..

Checked the relay to the ignition key... and it was full of sand..
Dont ask how it got there, but after i removed the sand it works fine.

I guess the sand got inbetween the connectors in the relay, so that the car believed that i had turned of the ignition..

It works all fine now. I bet VOLVO sent a person to sabotage my car, since this happended the day after i decided to buy a bicycle.. :D
