Rust, the story will never end...

Post by Duvel78 »

Yesterday I wanted to install the wires for the NICE bootlid that I got from Pete, with 3 things that I didn't have:

- the "injection" badge under the GLT :D
- the wiper (niiice)
- the 3th rear brake light (niiiiiiiice)

Everything was fine, here is the bootlid:

But when I removed the plastic panels inside.......

Plastic caps on the arche in bad condition > water inside > rust...
Image

The caps are good for the other side > no rust problem

Sooo check the arches guys, the caps...

Ouch, I've some pictures to post up for a simple prevention of rust technique that'll save future hassle at some point.

Out of interest, are you going to swap the lock, or I can send you a key, as the boot was always different and on a seperate key on my GLT? It might be handy as a spare to you.

The lock is swapped but I keep of course your slot as spare part! I would say keep the key for your front doors first, don't you think?

Seems a common rust point on 300s, my saloon has some rust there on the drivers side - that will be welded when my welder gets round to it (he's been pretty slow lately) :?

Well, shout if you need the key, as I have two. The doors won't be of any use, and the ignition is different, so it's up to you.

My car has that hole too...but even worse. Seems to be a regular weakspot then.
You should see the front of mine though...swiss cheese is the best description for it.

My 360 is fine there, and Nessy is good on at least one side, but has a hole in the boot floor (?)

cheers

my 360 is so bad in places, I am tempted to call it quits every tme I work on it..
But I dont let a bit of rust scare me that easily, am going to by a welder and give it some frankenstein-looking welds wherever it may need them. Life is so much easier when you dont care about the car looking good.
Last week we were towing the 360 to the dealership...I was very worried sinxce there was a lot of rust around the bumpermount.
Strangely enough it held, although the mount was pulled out by almost a centimeter on one side  ...
