MK3 rear wiper

Post by Fuse »

I found a MK3 rear wiper from junkyard nearby. I didn't have much time today so I took the motor, wiper arm and switch, but I guess there's a relay somewhere too. It's a different kind of system than the one in the technical resocurces section. In this one the wiper arm bolts directly on to the motor.

Where would the possible relay be located and what type of relay does it use. There was also a washer on the rear window and the switch seems to have two still positions and one third position, which only stays on when you push the button, when you release it it comes back to position two. I guess the third one is for washer, second is the wiper on and first is off of course. :-P (Of course I could be wrong too if the switch is bad and second position won't go on properly and it just seems to have third position )

It's a multipin switch, has more pins than the one in technical resources section, but it looks the same and comes next to foglight switch.

So where would I find the relay if there is one or can I use some general wiper relay.

What's funny is that the 340GL from which I took the wiper was an UK model with RHD and had GB sticker on the boot lid. Long way from home. ;) Too bad it didn't have any other electric accesories, I had my hopes up when I spotted the UK model in the yard because you guys usually got the toys.. But it didn't even have electrical mirrors. It had a sunroof though. I would've taken the rustfree panel, but it was badly dented above. (There had been another car on top)

There was also a clean looking (for a junkyard car that is) white 3dr 360 GLT, I tried to take out the fogs but it was kinda tricky because the car didn't have wheels and the phillips screws with which the fogs were attatched, were badly rusted so it would've required some cutting or drilling of the screws... Too bad because those looked super clean, maybe I'll take a cordless drill with me and take those fogs also at the next week. ;)

I've just pulled the whole rear wash wipe system from a 91 340, but I've posted the bits so this will all be from memory. I don't think the switch is connected to any seperate relay, it did have a red wire going through to the engine bay and ending at a plug which I think connected to some wiring for the headlight wipers (?) could be wrong.

Brown is earth, shared with earth for seat heater switches, red is the mad one, and the blue+black wires go all the way to the wiper motor itself.

Messy job to remove:

Hope this helps you.

UPDATE:

DERRRR sm87

The red wire of course connects to the pump for the rear wash, how else would it wet the window when you pressed it? Pardon my stupidity, it's been a tiring xmas with much alcohol consumption.

Thanks a lot! That cleared everything. Now I just have to make suitable wiring. :-P
