New boy saying hello.

Post by JPB »

Morning, fellow 340 maniacs.
I've been lurking for a while now but then I actually went out and bought a 340 (1989 GL 5 door vario) so I figured I'd start posting.

I live in the North East of England, on the coast, far away from the Motorway network and from most of the 340s that had appeared recently for sale. So, having cast the net a little wider and found my car on this very forum, I set off to a funny place known as Milton Keynes. My everyday car is a '72 Triumph Dolomite automatic so, given that the best I could have hoped for from that on a 550 mile round trip would have been high 30s/low 40s to the gallon, I elected to take something called a "bus" sm25 to collect the 340, which would then be driven home.

This happened yesterday, more of that tale of, well of joy as it happens, since the 340 covered the 270+ mile trip back home without any trouble at all and was one of those rare things; a car that turns out to be far better than pictures made it appear.

The car in question? See this thread. :D :D

Good news! I saw that car a few years back and it was clean back then so if it's anywhere near that still you'll be onto a good one! Pics needed ;)

That's what we like to hear - stories of Vario goodness. We need more Varios here, they can't all be hiding over in those other places. :P

Thanks for the comments folks. I shall be taking some piccies later today, tomorrow at the latest, so will post once those are done.

Thanks are also due to forum member and long-suffering friend "Macplaxton" who, in spite of his own vario-collecting fetish, didn't fly over from Dublin immediately and bag it for his personal fleet of Dafs and Daf-related products. Nice one Rich. :D

Is it rude to ask whereabout in the north east you are? That area's turning into the stronghold of the 340 community!

Not remotely rude. I'm in Ellington, home of the traffic-calming measure!

There's a blue metallic 'A' plate 340 that I see regularly around Ashington and Lynemouth areas, I'm wondering whether that belongs to anyone on here? I've waved at the guy a couple of times and flashed the lights but as I was in the Triumph on both occasions, he probably thought that I was just some crazy bloke.
Now I have a 340 to call my own, I'll see whether he notices me next time. If I'm in the 340 and not the daily Dolly.

I'd be well up for a local meet, how many of "us" are there in the area d'you reckon? Can we go down to Whitley and play with the boy racers some night perhaps? I do enjoy being half a mile down the road before the kid in the C*rsa has taken his foot off the clutch.
