for those poor ( and I dont mean financially ) people who do not have an ambient temp gauge ( £30.00 exchange for standard dash in case you had forgotten ) the gauge go's to -40 when the ignition is off .
just as the econ gauge( which is also included in this bargain package) rests in the red when the engine is not running

I know it means you coming down to Mk dave , but you would be better off doing the swap and then selling on the econ gauge and rev counter , you would probably recover your expenses so it would be worth the trip especially if you want the steering wheel as well.

put simply, I can't afford it mick.

I can stretch to £45 because I've got a bit tied up in paypal, but i can't afford £70 (plus petrol), plus I'm far too busy with my last couple of weeks at uni (ever) to be trying to sell stuff on to recoup losses, money is incredibly tight

It takes the inlet manifold vacuum. This is my understanding that follows...

All the pistons should generate a vacuum, as they go on the correct downstroke, sucking *stuff* (fuel/air mix) into the piston. The manifold is just connecting the pistons to the carb, if the carb butterflies are wide open, air rushing into the manifold to balance air pressure, this is econ in the red zone. When the butterfly is shut, air can't rush through, vacuum is held in the manifold (to an extent) and is white zone.

The reason no vacuum is the red part, is fuel is only 'pulled' into a carb engine, not pushed, it works like an airbrush, so the more air going through the carb, the more fuel is used.

(The main reason I just went that detailed, is as I have an idea for my engine, and want someone to correct me if I have the wrong end of the stick ;))

I think that's basically right Chris.

Same sort of thing on the EFI, except the fuel isnt pulled in from the air rushing through, the air flow sensor senses more air and injects more fuel accordingly. So more air = more fuel. And more vacuum = less air = less fuel = better economy (ie the white zone).

Vacuum is created when the engine tries to suck air out from an enclosed space (the inlet tract with the throttle(s) closed).

The fun starts when you look at the new BMW engine which doesn't make vacuum in the conventional sense - it limits engine output by reducing valve lift down to almost nothing. Very damn clever.

I'm getting tempted to get a temp gauge for Nessy.

cheers

It gets even more interesting if you tried to hook one up to a diesel engine!!!
