Just thought other people should know how important heat shields under the brake master cylinder are, a heat wrapped down pipe just isnt good enough, that or your car could end up burning on the side of the motorway like mine

the down pipe got so hot it melted the header tank, brakefluid on the down pipe, first i knew was the flames around my feet coming threw the melted colum boot. I just had to stand and watch it go up. anyone got a mint 40k miles 3 door 343 for sale and a turbo engine? Totally gutted

just got it running perfectly last night, typical. I'm going to give up messing with cars and start playing scrable.

Bugger dude. Gutted for you.
On the plus side I hope pleanty of ppl read this. I get realy peed off with ppl doing turbo conversion in rhd 240's without listening to advice about both brakes and clutch over heating due to the heat.
The other bit of advice is it is a good iea to carry a fire exinguisher in your car.
Sad news man and I hope you start the build again.

i'm looking for something 300 shaped to replace it, there is a couple of 340s in the scrapyard i work in, i'll be missing loads of parts but i might try and talk the boss in to selling me an unburnt shell, i'll see if my old block, head has been to melted, there might be something i can salvage. The ECUs and all the pipes and senders will be a nightmare to find so i'll have to decide if its worth the hassle, we've got a 2.3 turbo and a dead 360 so that plan might work better. definatly an extigusher would of saved it, i had about 2 minutes when i could of put it out if i'd had one, i was only thinking about putting one in at the weekend, thinking about it wasn't much help though

. i wont be driving a car with out one again!!!

I'm guessing this is why you designed my turbo manifold as you did?
On the flip side... eeeeeeeeps. I melted the ally spacers on my exhaust last week on the valver, so I must be getting some heat. Much food for thought.

i'd had my cast manifold cut and flipped then welded back together so the turbo sat at the front of the engine, it was the down pipe getting so hot that caused the problem. that had been routed really carefully to leave as much gap as possible between it and the master cylinder, heat shields! it would of saved the car. Annoying, ive got a plummed in extinguisher system in my golf, it was only about £80 if only i'd bought two!

After the whole retro-rides-petrol-leaking-on-hot-exhaust-manifold thing I installed a fire extinguisher in my boot. I'd be so gutted if my car went up

Mate sorry to hear about that, hope you get another ride sorted soon.
Speedy, while it's awesome you've got a fire extinguisher in the car, may i suggest you move it to the passenger footwell. Just if you have a fire you want to get to it asap rather than faffing about getting it from the boot. Hope i haven't just sounded like a lecturing tw@t

I tried that but it kinda gets in the way of drunk friends getting in/out. "What the fuck, why have you got a fire extinguisher in the way?!" was the comment I got from everyone. So I moved it to the boot. It's not hard, I jump out with my keys, unlock the boot and it's bolted to the back of the tail light plastic. We're talking an extra couple of seconds at the most

Yes, I've thought about it way too much.

Also keep in mind that the powder in extinguishers is very corrosive. Of course you'll save the rest of the car, but you'll have to hurry with cleaning all the powder (and dust).

That is part of teh reason but also to keep lengths equal.
Exhaust heat is extreamly hot especialy with turbos. I've seen turbos so hot you can se the veins from teh outside through the outer casing!!!!
