Started in general: engine / ignition type

Post by Olga »

I'm sourcing general consumables, like ht leads etc... for my 1990 1.4 automatic 340 and need to know:

A. what sort of engine, ie what's the code?
B. What sort of ignition is it, as the Haynes manual lists three types!

Also anyone recommend a good online motorfactors to get the stuff?

Thanks!! :D

In my experience of owning a 1.4 manual and hunting consumables:
Ebay can be your friend.

service parts seemed rife a year ago.
Recon it cant have changed toooo much in 12 months.

Sure theyre all B14.
Could be wrong, and it wouldnt be the 1st time, but id stake my reputation as someone thats right 14% of the time, on it.

1.4 ignition parts should be interchangable?
Think it was only renix units that differed. and you aint changing that so it immeterial really.
Dunno why i even mentioned it.

probably because I do like the sound of the word 'renix'. sounds very technical.

Ah, but need a new distributor cap and rotor arm... so it, according to Haynes manual, IS important to know whether a renix or not! Not just a pretty word ... :P

Well its "A" Renix unit. Certainly.
Surely it doesnt matter which one.

if it actually does, then see here:
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... f=6&t=3506

I could be astronomically wrong, but im gonna go out on a thin limb and declare the engines used on manual and vario 1.4s were......................... (wait for it)........ the same.

consumables SHOULD be the same.
Chris_C, Trabitom, Volvodspec or some other awesome technical genius will be along soon enough to shoot me down or back me up, so hang fire before you buy anything.

My track record in giving advice is embarrasingly chequered im affraid.
Its almost as bad as my spelling.

spark plugs can be used on any b14, NGK BPR6ES. kinglead is aprox 60cm long with renix ignition on a 85> car; 1984 renix is on the left side of the radiator and has a aprox 110cm kinglead.

there are differences listed in rotor arm, 8mm and 10mm. 8mm is for the pre-renix models, 10mm for renix equipped models. dizzy is also different, on all renix models it is screwed on, on pointed models have a clicked style dizzy (similar to b19/200)

make sure that you don't mix brands of manufacturers for rotor arm/dizzy to make sure that the rotor arm and dizzy contacts are on the correct height.

all point cars 84 and <84 have leads with a long kinglead (i believe 110cm also), same spark plugs and a 8mm dizzy/rotor arm set
your car is from 1990, so it has a b14.4e/b14.4s engine. the set for these engines is the renix equipped type so

sparkplugs NGK BPR6ES
leads set with 60cm kinglead
screwed dizzy + 10mm rotor arm (make sure you get a dizzy with brass contacts for longer life!)

hope that makes sence 8)

The ha ha was for volvosneverdie by the way... thanks volvodspec. That is fully clear, but for my own interest how do I find out which engine, b14.4e/b14.4s, I have?

Now, now, don't be too lazy. Venture outside, pop bonnet and have a look on the left hand side of the block (as sitting in Driver's seat) at the front below the alternator. There's a plate there with the engine number prefix and engine number on it.

Got a driver's handbook handy?

Cap probably looks like this

Where to find engine number?
