which 300 is the best for me

Post by Skiddies » 22 Feb 2010 05:30 pm

probably been asked a million times i did use the search but not found exactly what im after

right atm im driving a mk2f vw polo 1.3 which has been provisionally sold for £580 so ive got a few hundred pound to get me a 300. I love the styling because its pretty similar to the polo and anything old is best as far as cars go.

So im paying £1300 for insurance on the polo with Dick-rect line im 19 1 week and 1 day i could afford about £1700 ish for insurance (student finance ftw) but also need something that can 1 drift (im gona get flamed but im slowly learning to fix body work) and 2 use as a daily ...welded diff is no problem just man up as they say

was going to few a 1.7 loon but it got sold before i even booked my train ticket bit lucky really and then ive seen the lovely 360 gls in the sale section but too far away for me. Question is am i going to get raped for a 300 and what prices do people of similar age pay with a drop strip and welder

so recomendations plz for 300 and prices

tyvm

Hi mate.
Your better going for a 1.4 at your age as the insuance and tax will be cheaper.
A 360 will kill your bank account.Good luck.
Cheers Mark. sm4

You might get away with getting insured on a 1.7 but I'd get a 1.4 for now. 360 would be ok for drifting but it really depends on your future plans. Just remember to get a high miler one if you are planning on stripping it out for racing

Contrary to what people have said you might find a 360 isn't any more to insure than a 1.4, then again it aint much faster and you'll be filling up all the time. If you do insist on drifting it, don't wreck a nice example doing so. Also don't be under any illusion that they will drift out of the box (there's a difference between getting the tail out and actual drifting!), in reality none of them are really powerful enough in standard form. You would do far better buying a 700/900 turbo to be honest. Or dare I say it an early Mx5 would do the job...

I also bought the GLS in the for sale section ;) You might find one that already has some work done to it, most people buy them strip them out and then sell them on within a couple of months, pistonheads has about 3 like this atm!

Basicly dude, nothing is going to be cheap.
My advice is get the best that you can afford.
If you just want to learn or practice drifting for a year, get something scabby for mega cheap.
If you want a car that will do you for the medium to long term as a dailly/drifter, then spend more on a nice example.

1.4 + rain = drift. Weld diff for more drift but no pas means harder on your muscles parking et.
1.7 = similar. But + more swearing at carbz.

360 = more everyday comfort, toys and power.
but more insurance bumrape.

Hope this helps.

i intend on keeping it for as long as possible til i can afford to run a ps13 silvia. i wouldnt of thought the 1.4s have the power to get the tail out at all (apart from in the wet) i would like to get a standard but not mint one because atm my insurance policy needs standard car.

Not worried about filling up with petrol dont drive that often would only use it for monthly lidls run, picking up ebay winnings and going to drift events so bollx all petrol really and once my insurance is up id stick it on modified insurance.

What engine conversions are good for 360 or what sorta power can i squeeze out of all the 300 engines

advice is much appreciated

340 1.7 = renault 1.8 16v engines from clio/megane/19s?. Also David Walliams versions super 2.0 powers. Also 1.8 turbo engines from Volvo 400 series.
340 1.4 = as above but you need a lot of 1.7 converion parts. Forum search is your friend.

360 = 2.0 turbo, 2.3 na or 2.3 turbo from the 700/900 series.

Again, forum search brings more info up.

Power on the above?
Yes. lots.

I had a 1.4 from I was 17, and got a GLT when I was 19/20 and the insurance was 20 quid different between the 2 at the time. GLT insurance has gone up lately though it seems, more so than 1.4's.

As Steve says though, all standard will be less than great for much more than getting the tail out.

sweet i think the 360 is possibly the best (money no worries) because of the 2.3 turbo conversion possiblity. its a low pressure turbo right. would be good to learn more about turbos with something thats not very prone to shitting itself lol. Plus doing quote on confused.com just to get an idea the 1.7 and 360 gls are exactly the same too the penny which is good so will keep my eye out for either the 1.7 or 360 gls because of the clio and turbo conversions respectively

thanks for your help u guys are bril

If you're looking at 360's and turbo conversions... best bet is to find an injected 300 (GLT mostly)... that way the tank/fuel lines/pump will all be up to the job. 2.3 turbo is either in LPT or HPT... 3.5 or approx 10psi... chose the former for an engine that's had an easy life but all can run about 12psi no probs which would give a very reliable 170-180bhp
