Stealth's new home..

Post by RobT_75 » 03 Apr 2010 10:29 pm

Or should that be Giles, seeing as he's moved back south again?!

Not sure I've introduced myself before but I've been lurking around here for the last year or so. My usual choice of motor is anything British, especially all the old tat British Leyland/Austin Rover gave us in the 70s and 80s. At the moment I run a couple of Metros (1982 miniMetro 998, slooow but fun, and a Rover 114 as the daily) both of which keep me amused and are great little cars IMHO. Piccie below of them both at the storage depot i.e. the parents' driveway :)

But, 2 years ago some little scrote tried to nick the 114 and left it with a knackered steering rack so I needed a cheap motor to tide me over, hence my first 340. It wasn't just a random purchase I did actually want one, and ever since I've been hooked! It was a late 1.4 manual GL so had all the gubbins, the only thing it lacked was PAS, hence wanting a 360 once this one went. I sold it on for £80 which was probably too cheap as I now realise how clean it was, bar some harsh grazes down the rear OS quarter.

Anyway, back to the 360. I've been a bit bored recently, which is always dangerous, as a car purchase is usually imminent when I'm in such a mood. I did think about a 240 estate as we'll be moving house soon which meant I could justify it to the other half, but the one I tried just seemed a bit ponderous, and I've been wanting a 360 so good timing that Chalfont St Stealth came up for sale :) My justification now is zero, it's just a pure indulgence as I don't need another car, and if the 180 mile drive home from Leicester (I did a detour via Oxford!) is anything to go by I'm in for some fun with this beast.

It drives so well, a testament to all you guys on here who've worked on it. I sat on the M-way at around 65-70, with a few blips along the way to keep me awake, and I reckon the car returned upper 30s or dare I say even 40mpg :D And that's with a bit of town driving too. Pulls nice, stays flat into the corners, and the ride is firmer than my old 340 but not harsh, just right. Sorry to gush but with the sun shining the trip home was brilliant, I'm really loving this car.

But the best bit is i can now use that 'Caravan Tow Car of the Year 1985' sticker I've got

Hehe... another 'addict' in the making ;) Sounds good! A change for some less 'bling' wheels and that car will look pretty nice! Good luck with it.

ha ha ha. class.

Glad youre enjoying it mate. The rear leafs sit glts a bit lower, and the front springs are uprated and 2in lower so it should feel a bit more firm and grounded. Plus all the shocks are about a year old, so it should ride firm but fair

Cant wait to get my glt man, really miss them. 8)

Get many pics up while the suns out. :D

I'll get some pics over the next few days as I did clean him earlier but the light was fading. Looks so much better than all the dull modern shite my neighbours have! There you go, hasn't taken long for me to sound all superior with me 360

Oh, and a couple of things. Is the gearbox the same as used in the 340s, as this one doesn't like to be rushed into second similar to my previous 340. And should the grille be loose at the bottom? Again, i had the same with my previous one so not sure if the clips break easily or something.

It'll go if you ask it... the thing pulled like a train. Did also earn me 3 of her magisty's finest english points when I was late to a car show  Keep an eye on LE jet, but it's not hard to give a quick rejuvenate, maybe I should do a how to at some point if someone lends me a 200e to take pictures on? I'm certainly not a ninja with it but there are a few basic things that seem to fall over commonly

Pictures!!!

I've been so close to getting this thing back over the last 10 months, it doesn't deserve the unsettledness it's had! Good luck in looking after it! Keep an eye on the rear diff oil level, I did have to do a semi bodge on that. It was holding fine when I had it, but I didn't get the chance to keep an eye on it long term.

I can see why  I couldn't help myself taking a few roundabouts quick but kept the speed down on the motorway as didn't want plod to pull me over, there were loads of them out today.

Sounds like something I need to know, is this some Jetronic wizardry you're known for Chris?! What's the common things? Apologies if I'm asking you to repeat something that's covered elsewhere on here:roll:

Ha, no, I'm not known as a Jetronic wizard  Andy has a lot better understanding of it than me, but he's been away from the site for a while.

The problem comes from (I think..., at least this is what I've found on my LE jet cars) that the sensors are bi mettalic strips in several places. As they have moving parts it means that why often sieze hence why the cold start can seem rough on them. I really don't think the LE jet ecu's have any issues like some people have said as long as all the engine sensors are working correctly.

When I had her, I took a multimeter to every sensor in the engine bay and checked it was inside green book specs (look under the technical section below to find the correct green book!) Most of them were out, so I attacked them with a can of ultrasolve. I didn't buy any new sensors as I was planning on fitting LH jet, then I found out the uber house I was renting with it's own carpark was being demolished and I needed to reduce car numbers pretty rapidly! The only sensor that wasn't in tolerance was the flappy air meter but I stripped that down and dosed the contact tracks and wipers with Ultrasolve. That got it to within 10% of book specs from the 200% it was and she became the first LEjet car I'd known that was drivable as soon as it started in the morning!

I'm not sure if the bimettalic sensors are still available but for the tenner or so each they would cost I'd be tempted to do it.

As an aside... the speedo on that car is a lot more accurate than most 300's, thats what caught me out. 87 on the clock is 85 GPS.

Thanks Chris, very useful info I'll have a search through the green books. On cold start the other day it idled a touch uneven but nothing too concerning, and it drove away fine. If anything I may tweak the idle, as when warm it's around the 700rpm mark. And I'll check the diff oil.

they seem to be available still, but at a price

Oh, and congratulations on your new car :-) IIRC Jay is breaking a black GLT ATM, might be an idea to grab some spare panels while you can ...
