Where can I buy REDEX?

Post by CBA »

Went into halfrauds yesterday... looking for "REDEX CARBURETTOR AND FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER", simple task you'd think?
Looked around and can only find that stuff that's like pink dishwater, says redex on it but it's not redex!
waited for that bloke off the telly (the one who knows what you need before you walk in...) he wasn't there though, so I gave up.

Where the heck can I find some real oldskool redex, I like it because it smells nice, cleans your carb and engine and fuel lines/pump really nice and it is spectacular to do " sm2 THE ENGINE TREATMENT sm2 " don't you think?

---

Anyone know of a shop who would post me a bottle of redex? phone number of a shop who has it would be super...
I wonder what the shelf life is though... it's been discontinued for around 7 years... dunno how I didn't notice. I've used a 3 years in bottom of toolbox bottle of redex before, and it worked as usual. The shelf life will be a hard to find bit of info methinks.

My local motor discount has some I think, I could hunt it out perhaps. If not, Unipart do a good generic carb cleaner and they're everywhere.

I've scoured the local shops, no redex in sight... the thing I'm worried about with the new stuff is that it appears to be a detergent, it froths up when you shake it, the old stuff was a sort of oil, it was kerosene based.
Now, call me old fashioned but I always thought detergent was bad for engines and oil was good for them sm62 , So I ant pouring it down my intake!
I've seen some online, someone has a secret stash of the old stuff and I might fork out a tenner for it, or even buy a few - It's the only additive I've ever known to make a permanent lasting effect - EG Power increase instantly noticable, smoother running, easier starting... they really used to purr after the engine treatment I remember my bro's datsun and the applauds at every turn of another 1,000 miles (very regularly applauding another k sm99 sm48 ), why would they stop making this stuff sm11 ?

from the horses (holt's) mouth...

Redex was discontinued in 2004, the new stuff is just as good...
though it cant be poured in the intake and it cant be put in the cylinders...
it doesn't lubricate like the old stuff so pouring it in the cylinders can score the bores, plus it doesn't dissolve burnt oil like the old stuff, its not thick enough so wont coat the cylinder walls and valves even if you do pour it down the bores, just dilute the oil and maybe seize the engine.
Put a bit in the tank and it will clean the fuel system.

Its not "any good", it does 1 thing when before it did many things. Clever company that.

Right to fair comment upheld. Holts are **** for doing this and should be pelted with over ripe vegetables until improvement is shown.

And the old traffic light car fresheners... they gone bust too... I want one though, I found the Redex in bulk so maybe I find a box of traffic light fresheners too, though I'm sure THEY were banned because they contained benzene... smelled good enough to me! - just don't drink them aye?

WTF, it still says you can pour it in the air intake on the bottle! Unless I was buying up rare old stock

Does seem pretty silly if you can't, it's much more useful that way

Besides, what kind loaf of horse outcoming is it that you can't pour it into intake, put you can put it in the tank, now where it does go from the tank? Intake, that is where it goes, sure if you have full tank of petrol it is not so strong, but still, I wouldn't bother with the stuff.

I have cleaned my carb with brake cleaner, but don't never ever pour that to intake or use it to clean carb that is in car, brake cleaner is grease killer and oil = grease, so it will compromise lubrication of engine somewhat.

What was used old days when commercial products had not yet overrun common knownledge of cheap alternatives that are as good?

I know that using mix of diesel and kerosene (well it is valopetroli, called lamp oil and kerosene, it is stuff that is lot more flammable than diesel, unlike that other lamp oil which is more like diesel, so I don't really know what you call that), you can make mix that dilutes piston rings loose and fixes smoking, restores power etc etc. Also you can use that mix to clean fuel system too, Forte fuel system cleaner smells like diesel, feels like diesel, it probably has some other additives in it like kerosene, but certainly that is based on diesel.

Water, it is bit dangerous, you need to apply at least 2000 rpm and then very gently pour water into carburettor, it will clean motor very well, but if you pour many litres at all of sudden that is not good, too much water into cylinder and you will hydrolock engine which causes problems, like bend rods and such.

Can't remember now more, but I'm sure there is lot of cheap alternatives that can be used in place of these hugely expensive products.

no thats what I said, he said it's just the same... I dont trust it, it's not thick enough to coat the cylinder walls, all it will do is run past the pistons and into the oil - just my opinion.
It says on the bottle to just add to fuel, the email I got from the company mentioned nothing about "the carburettor treatment" so I presume it cant be done with the new stuff or he'd have said in the email (I asked about it) there's no way it can do the same job in such low doses - if you ever did the engine treatment on a "dirty" engine you'll know what I mean - you literally coated the inside of the engine with it, (this looks like a detergent and with jack shit surface tension is incapable of coating anything) with a hot engine, let it soak in then run the engine and burn it off - Decoking, Degumming and Deglazing all in one in 30 minutes if you really go to town... Sorry, I get attached to things that make my life easier - redex being one of them - this new formulation just doesn't give me confidence, it is truly like pink dishwater.

Spraying water down the intake, yes, that's a mighty old trick circa 1920, also jetting pure oxygen works.
But the "old" redex worked better than water can, water only turns to steam/scalding vapour when in the cylinder, redex gets to work with the valves.

---
I mean pouring the redex down the intake, soaking the inside of the carburettor with the engine off, pouring 15 ml down each plug hole. then cranking the engine with the plugs out, soaking the system from inlet to exhaust in a thick layer of solvents while the engine is hot, it soaks in, penetrates the carbon then you start it up and rev the knackers off it, all manner of thick gooey stuff comes out of the exhaust... I don't think the new stuff would do anything at all apart from run down into the sump and evaporate.

Anyway I'm buying some old stock I found online, shall put it in a locked cabinet.

I should have asked "Where can I buy original REDEX"... I mean the stuff discontinued (as I now know) about 4 years ago.

I have some coming in a few days... will post a video of the engine treatment process from start to end, and do the egg test before and after to show the difference.
