I'm glad xr4is are getting a lot of love these days (think pc mag is restoring one ATM?). Them and xr4x4s are pretty much the last tax-free retro fast fords.
Think that's changing now though.

Aye it's changing! A mk1 (xr4i) is around £6-700 for a shitter. Steve gave about £300 for his IIRC, around the same time I got the Volvo. One owner 30K miler, original brake pipes etc. Now it's had a full dip and rebuild it's strictly a fair weather cruiser though!
I tried to buy one as my first car lol. Stolen recovered, £250 in the scrappers. Needed a lock set and some wiring. Insurance: £2500. WEAK.
The mk1 3dr Sierras look awesome. I almost prefer the 4i to the Cosworth.

Yeah I've been reading the xr4x4 resto in PC as well. What's this about the tax free cars changing ben? I was always under the impression that the new government would re-instate the rolling 25 year tax break

Most retro fords are impossible to buy because they command such high prices, just for being retro fords. Non cossy sierras had sort of slipped under the radar, but now even base sierras (and p100s!) are making bigger money.
The time to buy a good xr4-wey aye was about three years ago.
Re: Liam's GLS: New pics 24/06/10 (Mini, XR4i and 360) insid
Ah I see. Lots of things are gaining scene tax now, even the square faced minis. In some ways I want the value and interest of 300s to go up but it's always remained a cheap and fun corner of the car market. The value seems to have once again dropped. I guess we'll have to enjoy it while it remains

I love XR4i's
About 10 years ago a friend of a friend acquired a minter (hankies at the ready.....) glued a jap bodykit to it, ripped out the interior, binned the rear spoiler and stuck a whaletail on it. Then slammmed the thing into a tree whilst doing doughnuts....
Wazzock.... he got his comeuppance a coupla years later when I put my fist into his face for chatting up my girlfriend (though everyone knew it was for wrecking that car
)
I used to have a Scorpio 4x4, pretty much the same running gear as the xr4x4. Ex-police car, lovely thing to car - when it wasn't chewing CV joints and propshafts.... I ran that until it bankrupted me - but I didn't mind all that much

Nice to see the OSF love on here.
As said before, the Volvo kinda satisfies my need for retro fun, but without the scene tax. I would swap it in a heartbeat for a decent 4i though. Sorry.
A mate and I fitted the speakers on Saturday. I cannot recommend these enough! I paid £15 posted and they sound more like £50 10cm speakers. I know even that isn't a massive amount, but usually 90% of 10cm/4" speakers do are make noise and they don't even do that well. These have very nice clarity, more than decent mid-bass and handle volumes I would expect of a 16.5cm/6.5" unit.

I was thinking they would do just to tide me over and then I would get some Focals or perhaps better Vibe, but there is no need now. The sound reminds me of the Inifinit Kappa range (or what it used to be like, I have no idea now). What I like to think of as high-end budget.
Thumbs up to Volvo for the speaker pod location too. Nice height/angle.
I run these and two 16.5cm Ground Zero co-axials from a 4x60WRMS Alpine HU and with the addition of a little bass i will be very happy. I never wanted an 'install' just some 'music'.
Pointless pics...

Original fitting kit FTW. Have I failed by cutting uncut OMG rare mk2 cards? lol
They weren't a straight fit into the OEM housings. So a little trimming here and there was needed. I will say what has been done incase it is of use to anyone else.

There was a protruding 'ring' on the underside of the cover. You can see where it has been flatted off.

Similar deal for the speakers. The grey outer ring has been ground down to about 50% of the original size to gain the clearance for the covers to snap shut. (yeah it's rough, but you don't see it.)
And in.

The whole setup.

As can be seen, the OEM grilles (or any other) aren't fitted at present. This is because the tweeter protrudes from the speaker pod.
I am going to modify the original grilles so that it clears. I guess I will have to bulge the centre out. I don't want to leave them as they currently are. Stealth is the name of the game here.
Plus the driver design looks shite IMO!

Re: Dusty Drifter: I can has sounds.
Cool man.
May have to get round to some sounds in the Variho at some point.
May snag some of them for the 'To Do' pile.

Re: Dusty Drifter: I can has sounds.
Good stuff mate. Do it. The head unit I use will have a lot to do with how impressed I am with the sound quality. I paid £400 for it and it sat unused for around 2.5 years until I got the Volvo :/
I am confident they will sound sweet through anything though.
Bag some now. I think they're last years model or some crap.
Cheers man.

Im an audio-idiot, so answer me these questions three.
A) for a decent sound without spending any money, what kind of set-up would you suggest?
2) See A
C) See 2.
Re: Dusty Drifter: I can has sounds.
Some of those Fli's up front (if you want to use standard locations etc) and maybe some similar spec *6x9's in the shelf powered straight off a semi-decent Alpine or Pioneer head unit would be my choice I guess.
*Usually I have no time for these things, but they do give a lot of bang for buck.

Re: Dusty Drifter: I can has sounds.
That will be nice and stealthy if you can adjust the grill to suit, i find my grills pop off of the backing plate on their own anyway when the doors are slammed too hard. Yesterday imyself did attemp to fit some 5 1/4" cheapo JBL's i got in a shop clearance to the fronts. Admitedly not keeping it stealthy but with dirty great MDF spacers, alas i failed or my design need improving as you cant attatch the wires when the spacer ring is fitted
Oh well back to the drawing board me's thinks.

Cheers Mag. Yeah the grilles do like to pop off don't they lol. Hope you get sorted out dude. Me thinks glue may be required to solve both of our woes. lol
Right. I have (apparently) secured a 1996 940 estate with B230FT and I am looking for assistance with what I need to remove from the donor vehicle in order to convert my mk2 360 GLS. (TY once again for lettign me know of the 940 Ben
)
What do I need then?
Engine is obviously a given.
A 360 water pump?
360 oil pump (or is standard 940 fine?)
Fab a downpipe.
Flywheel/clutch (what's the issues here?) Can I run the 360 fly/clutch so there's no compatibility issues?
Universal FMIC (or recommend any OEM intercoolers?)
Pipe a return to the fuel tank.
Inline fuel pump/possible swirl pot. (are the 940 pumps inline?)
Wiring loom (how much? I guess I will gut the whole thing from head light to tail light, but would prefer not to if it's not required!)
RHS engine mount (can the 940 one be used or does it require fabricating?)
Sump (so I need to swap over the 360 item?)
Does anyone have a list or a WIP project I can read to give me some insight? I don't want the car off the road for long, otherwise I would just plod on and work it out.
This is being done on a budget, as per. The theme of the whole car lol. The 940 will be weighed in to go towards funding this too.
Any and all help much appreciated, Liam.

I'm following a similar route but in less of a hurry. Currently repairing the body rust.
1996 940 SE turbo Estate
1987 360 GLE saloon
Main Fab jobs:
RHS Engine mount + brackets
Exhaust down pipe
It looks like the 940 engine side bracket +cranked mounting might fit with some small trimming of the hat above, but its very close. There is just 25cm in the 360, not sure it would be enough to allow for wobble. There is a angled plate in the 940 at the bottom of the mount meaning the chassis side bracket can be made 90deg.
Hopefully we can share info or do a group purchase. It would be good if we can get drawings for these so >1 can be made.
Exhaust is a problem for me as I need to get her MOT ready before going on public road, and then I'm only allowed to goto the MOT station. (N.Ireland gov't test only MOT). The details and accuracy required does concern me, the standard down pipe has a habit of toughing the chassis as it is. If we could get standard sections that fit together I can weld plenty. I plan on making custom exhaust upto the end of the 360 down pipe then 360 parts there after until I can get to a custom fitter.
Comments on your list
yes need to swap over sump and oil pump
Need flat flywheel from an older 900/700/200 to go with LH2.4 (940 dual mass flywheel won't fit), but I think clutch plate will fit depending on what flywheel you get, but I doubt it will hold the B230FT on 11psi boost. If you want to stick with 360 flywheel, you need programmable engine mgt such as mega squirt.
With injection you will need a complete set of new fuel lines.
Not sure how you are approaching the fuel supply, the 360 injections have a slightly different tank where the fuel comes out the bottom (injection pumps don't suck air I think), 940 has an in-tank pump. I plan to use a 360 injection fuel tank and 360 injection pump (can easily upgrade if necessary). Carb tank could be modified with some braising.
Move dizzy to side using 360 parts and intermediate shaft apparently. Flywheel pick up, I'm not sure yet but hopefully 360 one will work with LH2.4, otherwise modify the bell housing to fit 940 one, the bracket sticks out of the block into the bellhousing.
Intercooler - yes, ebay apparently a good source using chinese ones - havn't looked at too deeply yet.
