EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
Evening!
While checking the oil/coolant levels earlier, I noticed the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system as fitted to the Aus 360...
Stepping back to admire its Heath Robinson-esque arrangement of pipes and whatnot, I remembered that when I had my Landrover Discovery 300TDi, I was able to blank off the system to allow the Diesel engine to perform better - i.e more powerz.
Not that I'm going to try this on the 360, as its my daily driver and the injection system is a fickle creature at best of times, and my policy of DO NOT MESS is working fine, so I just wondered if this can be done, and would there be any point to it?

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
yes this can be done and is a common thing to do on dutch 360's
here;
at the red arrow, there are 2 hex screws; undo them and fit a blanking plate to seal this channel and the egr valve isn't applyed anymore.
what remains is the pipework from the manifold at the right side of the engine: to the valve at the left side of the engine: the best is to eliminate that too, the pipe can rot away and that gives a tractor noise, annoying at highway speeds.

Kay so i wanna remove as much as the ERG on my car as possible, so let me get this clear
The exhaust manifold has that line, i could plug that of or take a non ERG manifold to replace it with (got a B230F that has one)
Also all the stuff (valve?) on the last pic.. can you remove that easily.. i have all the greenbooks on the 300 execpt the ERG bit (or do i but i cannot find it?)

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
Done this to my B230FK in the 360.
As said, blank it off at the inlet and at the exhaust manifold. Then throw the silly little vvalve etc in the bin.
I will make up some plates for mine, but this is how it is for now.

I don't seem to have a pic of the exhaust manifold, but it's just folded over the same. No problems here.

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
it will eventually tear at the folded area, but then we're talking years from now..
you could also simply clamp it flat and then (TIG)weld the pipe shut without folding it over

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
I just went for several folds and a good squueze int he vice between each. Like you say, it will last for now.
I will fit a B200 inlet and weld a bolt into the exhaust manifold when the car comes off the road.
What's the aceppted way of dealing with this little fella once the EGR has been removed Anjo?

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
errr.. that's not a 3-series part is it?
haven't seen that one on a 300 before..
anyway, dissconnect the hose + t-piece that is linked in the vacuumline from manifold to the distributor or Renix so that is a direct link, and follow that hose and remove all the parts that belong with it excluding the pieces that are bolted into the engine; that's all there is to it

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
That's what I done lol.
Nah my apologies, it is from the B230FT. Some for of VAC sensor I think, the EGR was connected to it as is the inlet/wastegate IIRC. Maybe my OEM mounting confused you(!)

Hi Chaps,
do all 360s have EGR, ie my 88 glt, and how much power does it free up?
cheers Jason

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
No, as far as I know no UK 360's were fitted with EGRJaspersilus wrote:Hi Chaps,

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
Cheers Steve,
did sort of wonder why it hadnt been mentioned before if it gives free power!

Re: EGR/Pulsair gubbins (360)
It really doesn't give all that much power as its supposed to shut off again at full throttle. Its designed to recircle exhaust gases into the air intake to cut down nitrous oxide emissions at part throttle and cruise. You can sometimes increase your MPG at cruise by blanking off your EGR. though as Steve says no 360 in the UK had it.
The real trouble is when they start rusting up and getting stuck. Stuck shut is fine, but stuck open means gutless power and if you've ever seen diesels absolutely belching smoke all over the road, there's a good chance their EGRs are stuck open.
